swellmomma
Being charged with disorderly conduct for cheering for their friends at high school graduation http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080610/koddities/graduation_no_cheering By The Associated Press ADVERTISEMENT ROCK HILL, S.C. - Authorities say seven people attending high school graduations in Rock Hill, South Carolina, are facing charges after police say they cheered while students' names were being called. K&Rs Mom
A police spokesman says school officials request police patrols to prevent graduation disruptions that include standing, hollering and clapping. Uh, isn't that WHY people go to a graduation - to clap for their friend/relative? :001_huh:
nancypants
Oh my word. How dumb is that?! They would have arrested everyone at the ridiculous commencement ceremonies at my brother and sister's small private school (I left it and went to ps for my last two years of high school.) It became so ridiculous there... people would bring ENORMOUS balloon bouquets, flowers, people dressed in costumes to congratulate their graduates... really... it was INSANE. Whole families would parade up after the graduate received their diploma and all hug the person and give them gifts... These things involved like 30 students and lasted something like four hours. It was beyond insane! They finally put a stop to it because some people didn't have family or their family couldn't afford loads of crap to heap on them on stage, all for show... (((shudder))) It was disgusting. Gosh, you got me off on a tangent... I suppose the point of it was that, sheesh... it can get a lot worse than cheering and clapping! :001_huh:
elegantlion
There was a story a few years ago about guests being turned away from a high school graduation due to inappropriate attire. I'll see if I dig up the info. ... I can't find it right now, but it was in the Kansas City area. That was insane as well.

MyThreeSons
This happened not too far from here. It's pretty much standard procedure that you're not allowed to clap or cheer. I hadn't heard of actual arrests before, but the offenders are usually escorted out of the stadium. All spectators are repeatedly warned, both before arriving and once there. It's not unusual for there to be 500 - 600 kids in a graduating class. If people cheer, the flow is interrupted or the next kid's family doesn't hear his name. And with that many students, they simply can't take the time to wait while each kid is cheered. (It seems to me that arresting or removing the offender creates more of a distraction than the offense.)
