A ten year old is not too old for the Story of the World. I had my 11 year old do Year 4 this past year. He thoroughly enjoyed it along with reading some other history books from the time period. I actually believe that the content of Year 4 is geared for an older child because of all the human atrocities and wars these past 200 years.

My DD used them for 1st-4th grade and now we use them the second time around as an introduction on Mondays and use KFE on Wed. and do activities and further study on Fridays. Even my High schoolers have overheard a lesson or two and have made a comment like "oh.." they got the connection of this or that when it was put more simply.

My dd has used 1-4 and will be doing them again along with the the stuff Julie mentioned. Also I use the activity guide to pick out the books we will read. In advance of the lessons I order the books at our library. That way if our library does not have the book they can be brought in from other libraries and ready for pickup within a week. It makes it so nice to have them ready to go.
