gifts that went over better than you assumed...

We bought this Fancy Nancy book and doll set for Abby last Christmas. We got it for $15 on Black Friday and I was certain she was going to love it because she loved the Fancy Nancy books. She liked it when she opened the gift, but it soon fell to the wayside. I should have known because she's a stuffed animal girl through-and-through.

BUT, my 2yo has LOVED Fancy Nancy as well...she carries this doll EVERYWHERE. She goes to sleep with her, puts bows in her hair when I'm doing Ellie's hair, helps her go potty, etc. I would have never guessed it would have been loved THIS much (and by the "wrong" person)!

What gifts have you bought for your kids that have gone over better than you imagined?

A playsilk. I used it to line the baby's easter basket last year and it became THE toy. It's his monster costume (because he can see through it), it's a cape, it's a nursing blanky, it's a light cover for summertime, it's a pirate bandana..I never thought they'd get so much use out of it.

Ok, not gifts, but cardboard boxes. My kids do more things with boxes then they ever do with toys. And sometimes they combine them with toys. Just the other day they built a "space ship" on their bed using boxes and various props! Toys are overrated!

Here too, even though she's 11! She loves constructing things -even a flail! (mediaeval weapon -spiked ball on a chain)

My younger sister? It was a box of aluminum foil when she was nine or so. She was always using bits of tin foil for crafts from my mother's box, so my mother gave her one of her own for Christmas, as a joke. The things she made out of that box of tin foil! Slippers, crowns, and helmets feature largely in my memory, but she also made all sorts of little toys to play with.

It was a lot more endurable and enjoyable for her than I would ever have thought!
