Kindle for teens: what would you pre-load?

Recommended Posts

For Christmas I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire for my 17yo and purchased a regular Kindle for my 12yo. I want to pre-load a few books for each of them in addition to giving an Amazon gift certificate so they can choose a few of their own books on Christmas morning.

What would you choose if these were your 17 and 12 year old boys?

For the oldest, I would choose "Do Hard Things." I don't think Harry Potter series is available on Kindle; at least, it wasn't the last half-dozen times I looked. :D Maybe "The Lightening Thief" for 12 yo.

Great idea!

I think you're right about HP.

My boys have specific interests, and I find books in those areas for them.

When they were 12, they had many favorite authors, and I chose the latest books by those authors. Usually it was YA fantasy novels.

One of my boys only read about baseball at that age. He received one fiction book -- Samurai Shortstop; the rest were nonfiction.

When I select books for my kids, I usually look for at least one book by an author they are unfamiliar with. To do this, I research books for those who like [X title], and read reviews. Lists like that usually show up on library websites.

For the older son:

Surely You're Kidding, Mr. Feynman

The Foundation Trilogy

A Prayer for Owen Meany

For the younger son:

Ender's Game

Ender's Shadow

For either or both:

Profiles in Courage

The Complete Works of Shakespeare

The Call of the Wild

The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe

The Complete Works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Jim the Boy

The Complete Works of Charles Dickens

Wonderful suggestion, as always. Thank you so much!
