Pencils with dark lead?

At the moment, my ds is using a professional sketching pencil to do his writing. He likes how dark the lead is on the paper. But the lead is too fat to let him write neatly. Is there a writing pencil that has nice dark, smooth lead like an artists sketch pencil?

Pencils are rated by hardness and you should experiment to find one that is dark enough to make him happy and yet hard enough to hold its point.

Feel free to experiment with pens too. I just read this article a few days ago; IEW suggests children write with pens.

I've always liked mechanical pencils and drafter pencils. They do make darker lead refills too.

We use mechanical pencils. You can find many designs, along with varying leads, in the standard 0.5 mm size. I've always liked the 0.7, and I have managed to find some good choices of pencils, along with darker leads.

 

My DS is very fond of a larger grip plastic mechanical pencil by Papermate. (Rhis pencil also helped him with his grip.) You can always try http://www.Jetpens.com if you have trouble finding a good choice of pencils or leads in your area.

Mirado Black Warrior pencils have darker lead. My kids love them.

I like Dixon Ticonderoga number 2 pencils. Their number 3 pencils are very light, though, so avoid those.

:iagree: We love these too. Just an FYI if you have one near you, Costco sells them for about $9 for 96 of them. Best price I've ever seen.
