RootAnn
I'm looking for some songs to learn and/or additional songs for my kids to be exposed to that were popular (and many people recognize them today) during different times in American history. We're doing a "unit study" (loosely) approach next year to US History and I thought this would be a fun addition as my kids love to sing. I found this thread with different ideas. I don't want a focus all on "patriotic songs." While I'm planning on including Yankee Doodle/Star Spangled Banner/America the Beautiful/etc., I'd like to include things like "O Susanna," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," and "Home On the Range." Here are two CDs I have bookmarked: I Hear America Singing and Songs About America. (I've looked through all the links in the previous thread, BTW, and these are two that fit the bill without too much extra or too much $$.) Anyone else have a good resource with this type of thing all in one (or two) places or know of someone who has already coordinated songs with US History times/places? :001_smile:

LAS in LA
The Laura Ingalls Wilder songbook (or maybe it's called The Little House songbook) has a lot of traditional songs. They might be from mostly the same time period, though. The public library may even have a copy. HTH
HSing...AndLovin'It
I hear America Singing is very good. We still sing The Cat Came Back. We have enjoyed the Vol 2 by Matthew Sabatella; he has a nice bass voice that's different. http://rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?sid=1306380686-1540100&q=ballad Pete Seeger has lots of american folk song albums but I have not heard him. I think he was referenced in the I Hear America Singing book but I'm not 100% on that.
Rivka
We have a book called From Sea to Shining Sea: A Treasury of American Folklore and Folk Songs. It's a mix of folk tales, poems, and songs with sheet music, and it's beautifully illustrated.
