Dianne-TX
for Christmas. (Yes, I know it's almost May...) After looking it over, it doesn't have a cd-rom drive! How can I install anything on it for them? Is it worthless? What do I do with it?
Mama Geek
If it has a USB or Firewire port then you could get an external hard drive. It is weird that it doesn't have one.
tntgoodwin
Is it a small laptop, called a netbook? You have 3 main choices: 1. Install over a network (either the Internet or a home network) 2. Use a USB flash drive to copy files over from a different computer, then install. 3. Get an external USB optical (CD or CD/DVD) drive. Mandamom
My acer netbook doesn't have a CD or DVD so if I needed to I would just install from a website or purchase an external drive. I use a flashdrive a lot to move around music and pictures.
ChristusG
It's probably a netbook. Those are mainly used for surfing the internet.
Belacqua
I have a netbook with no cd-drive, and I just use an external optical drive when I need one. The one I use is an Asus, and it wasn't terrifically expensive. Works fine so far.
Dianne-TX
I mainly want to put computer programs on there that they use like their typing program and also set up the printer, which uses a cd to install. Can I save these programs on a flash or do they not transfer like that? I do have an external hard drive that I use to backup my own laptop, would that work? How is that any different than using a flash?

Just do a search. i'm not real sure about moving the typing program to a flash drive bbut I'm thinking that won't work very well. I do know that if I were in your situation I would probably be finding a new website based typing program and and either working from there or downloading from there. tntgoodwin
You could copy the files from the install cd to a flash drive, then install it on the Acer computer, should work fine.
jujsky
Like others said, it must be a netbook and not a true laptop. I'm typing this on my Acer laptop right now & it definitely has a CD drive. I need that to play the SIMS :D
Dianne-TX
Success!!! Thank you everyone. I saved the entire files for each program on a flash and copied them onto their computer and it worked! The programs launched just fine and we are in business. Yay! Yall are so smart! ;)
KarenNC
I do know that if I were in your situation I would probably be finding a new website based typing program and and either working from there or downloading from there. I'm glad that the OP seems to have her issues worked out. In case anyone else is looking for a web-based typing program, my 10 daughter loves Dance Mat typing from the BBC (and it seems to be working). It's free. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/
