Myra
Okay, my ninth grade son has hit a wall with his history. We need to take a break and just relax so I thought some nice historical fiction books might be the answer. So, ladies, can I have some suggestions? Time period - well, I'm not being choosey - he has just finished Chapter 17 in Speilvigel's Human Odyssey - but any good, juicy, fun historical fiction would work! Thanks, Myra
Skadi
For those of us who don't have Human Odyssey, can you give us more detail about what period chapter 17 covers? :)
stephanier.1765
My 9th grader is presently reading Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae Unfortunately he isn't very far into it to offer a review and I haven't read it yet (but I intend to). It looked like an exciting read.
Myra
Let's see, the chapter he just finished is about Ottoman Empire and the next is about India during the Muhgal Empire. But any time period would do - just fun to read and somewhat historically accurate would be nice! Thanks, Myra
Skadi
Oh okay! :) I second the suggestion for Gates of Fire, and I'd also suggest another Pressfield book, The Virtues of War: A Novel of Alexander the Great. A few other favorites: The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff (200) The Lives of Charlemagne by Einhard (750) The Year of the Conquest by David Howarth (1066) Anna of Byzantium by Tracy Barrett (1100) Otto of the Silver Hand by Howard Pyle (1273) In Freedom's Cause: A Story of Wallace and Bruce by G.A. Henty (1305) The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy (1792) Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson (1793) Napoleon: A Life by Paul Johnson (1799) Mr. Midshipman by C.S. Forester (The Hornblower series) (1803) The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier by Jakob Walter (1812) The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacquiline Kelly (1899)
