mombygrace
My 5 yr old would be done with 7 and most likely 8 by the end of the school year and I wonder what others do. Do we focus on spelling or further phonics ?? what do we move to ? do we just keep reading? He reads well, has completed alphaphonics, HOP, blend phonics and has used ETC since A. He struggles with handwriting and I would like to focus on that so something without much writing would be best. He does about 20 minutes to 1 hour of reading daily depending on interest. We have Mcguffey readers and he has read the primer and first reader.
mombygrace
Any ideas?? I do better with a plan and I don't know what to do next. We do not use a formal curriculum and he is still young. I added his age hoping someone with experience in that age group would weigh in. There are so many programs out there, it gets confusing :001_smile:
StephanieZ
I did SWO and just read books. (I love Pathway Readers if you need a leveled reader. . . after that, we just read nice books!)
lionfamily1999
Well, as long as he's still five you could just stick with reading fun books. For his handwriting some copywork would be good too. I don't even bother with buying something for that. I just use the wider lined paper and write out the sentence in my best handwriting for ds to copy. Once you're ready for first grade, I'd go with Spelling Workout, First Language Lessons, and Writing with Ease. :D
Aludlam
We moved on to AAS. A lot of it is/was review, but I've found that around here "reading a word" and "spelling a word" are two totally different animals.
mombygrace
Thanks everyone. I'll take a look at the suggestions. We have pathway and abeka readers and he likes them too. I'll include them.
Satori
I was kinda wondering what we'd do as well. My 6 year old will have finished ETC 8 later this spring. She's already reading, writing and spelling very well, so I suppose we'll just continue with All About Spelling. We'll be on AAS Level 4 at that time. We'll also focus on reading books that challenge her more.
mombygrace
I will look into AAS and maybe creating a reading list so I keep track of his progress.
