vlgimmelli
Can anyone share with me a good remedial reading program? My son is 11 and a very poor reader and very poor in comprehension, hence, he does not like to read because he just doesn't understand what is going on in the story. AngieW in Texas
It's hard to make a recommendation without more information to help in figuring out what the issues are. He could be having problems with comprehension because the reading is so difficult for him that he doesn't have any brainpower left over for understanding. My dd had this issue. She could read basic code, but it took all her brainpower just to decode the words, so nothing was left over for understanding. When she got a little past that, we had to work on her reading speed. When you're reading at 10-12wpm, the story is so slow that it's extremely difficult to follow. My dd's reading comprehension skyrocketed once we got her reading speed over about 75wpm. We had to work on decoding first though. If he's solid with basic code, then Rewards Reading Secondary could be a big help. It's a fairly expensive program, but it has good resale value. The teacher book is $89.95 and the student book is $10.75. You don't need any other components. If his problem is primarily with comprehension, then a program like Visualizing and Verbalizing might help. That's abbreviated as V&V a lot on these boards. Another program that is often recommended is Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing (abbreviated LiPS). Do you have any further information you can post about your ds? http://store.cambiumlearning.com/cs/Satellite?c=CLG_Product_C&childpagename=Store%2FStore_Layout&cid=1277941105645&packedargs=packedargs%3Dprgid%253D1277940958264%26prgid%3D1277940958264&pagename=Store_Wrapper&rendermode=previewnoinsite http://store.cambiumlearning.com/cs/Satellite?c=CLG_Product_C&childpagename=Store%2FStore_Layout&cid=1277941106081&packedargs=packedargs%3Dprgid%253D1277940958264%26prgid%3D1277940958264&pagename=Store_Wrapper&rendermode=previewnoinsite http://www.lindamoodbell.com/programs/visualizing-verbalizing.Aspx http://www.lindamoodbell.com/programs/lips.Aspx
ElizabethB
If the problem stems from being taught sight words in school, my online lessons should be helpful. All of my remedial students have been helped with nonsense words and Webster's Speller, regardless of the cause of their problems, the syllables in Webster's Speller are helpful and nonsense words are helpful for many different problems. Other good programs for older children are We All Can Read and Right Track Reading, they are linked on my phonics and spelling books page: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/phonicsandspelli.html My phonics concentration game makes both real and nonsense words: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html Also, older students find my syllable division rules and exercises helpful, they are linked at the end of my how to tutor page: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/howtotutor.html
vlgimmelli
Hello, Thanks for all the great advice. My son has trouble with reading words, he doesn't sound out all the letters in the word. I try to help him and suggest to him to break the word up, which is how I learn hard words..and it really helped me. Once he can see words and sound out all the letters in the word, he will be able to read faster and therefore understand somewhat of what he is reading because the story would not be as boring from the slow reading. SusanEAC
You should check out the resource that Karyn in Canada told us about in this thread. Or, here's a direct link to the pdf file. I was able to finally find something to help my son with his reading comprehension problems that really helped to lighten the work load for me on it.
