anabelneri
Hello! I was wondering if anyone in this group has found a useful reading program for kids after OPGTR... it has taken dd (7yo) to a 4th grade "reading level" but she has high school level "sentence comprehension" (according to her educational specialist). Last year her "reading level" was also at a 4th grade level, and since we had just finished OPGTR last year when she took the test I'm thinking that her reading skills haven't improved much in the last year. I'd like to help her continue moving forward, but haven't figured out what's next. Thanks! Anabel
alpidarkomama
We finished a month or so ago. Now we're in Book 2 of the McGuffey readers and we read 2-3 stories out loud per day, plus 30+ minutes of independent reading. We started about halfway through the second book. Works great for us! :)
Dinsfamily
What about a phonics-based spelling program? I'm using SWR with my oldest who was reading at a 4th grade reading level at the end of last year. Because he has to spell harder words using the phonograms and spelling rules, both his reading level and spelling levels continue to improve. One advantage to using SWR is that it is easy to place an advanced dc higher and accelerate the program based on their pace. We've used SWR from the beginning so didn't need the placement tests but it is outlined clearly in the book. The spelling lists go up to college freshman level. ElizabethB
Webster's Speller! It teaches phonics to a 12th grade level. You can combine it with some spelling rules by following the program on my how to tutor program, but for a good reader, you just read 2 and spell 1 or 2 words from each unit, adding in the syllables and rules as described in my "Guide to using blend phonics" and my rule documents. The syllable division rules and exercises should also be helpful. And, the guide explains syllables so it makes it easier to do Webster's Speller. Or, my phonics lessons teach everything on the how to tutor page, you could just watch those and then do the syllable division exercises and Webster's Speller.
