I am looking for a program that will get my child from Singapore 5b to calculus. I really don't want to keep switching programs each year. I am starting to like being in a groove where we go to the next step and not have to search every year for new curriculum. So, suggestions? We're currently using Derek Owens for geometry, after having used the Algebra 1 textbook he recommends for algebra (on our own) last year. He offers pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, pre-calculus, and AP calculus. We're doing the "in real life" version of geometry, though I find myself thinking we could have done just as well with the online-only component. Each student uses pre-printed fill-in-the-blanks notes which they complete while watching Derek's videos online (or in the classroom). Then there is home work to be done in the textbook and additional homework to complete and turn in (scan and email, fax, snail mail), and Derek grades this and returns it via email (turn-around is nearly always < 24 hours -- sometimes much less). There are regular tests. And Derek responds quickly and thoroughly to all our email questions. Anyway, ds is loving the class, and after all these years I'm thrilled to give up the work to someone else who is qualified, quietly enthusiastic, and very conscientious. So, lol, while there's not a single textbook series that I can say, "Oh, use this, use this!", I'm really happy with the way geometry is going this year and I'm looking forward to sticking with Derek through AP Calc... They are adding geometry this month, so you'd be able to do Prealgebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II with them. By the time you get there, they should have Precalculus and Calculus. This FAQ and chart will help you compare the 4 Secondary options, but very generally: Singapore Secondary Options 1. New Elementary Math (NEM) = most challenging; answers to most; TM has fully worked solutions 2. Discovering Mathematics (DS) = less challenging; all answers; fully worked solutions; most amount of teacher material 2. New Syllabus Mathematics (NSM) = similar in challenge/content level to DM; more workbooks; has answers but not fully-worked solutions 4. New Mathematics Counts (NMC) = easiest/shortest problems; 5 book series rather 4 to cover same topics; no teacher material; no workbook Choose NEM for very bright math students who think mathematically and who are headed into heavy math/science fields. For average-to-bright math students not headed toward math/science fields, choose DM or NSM. Singapore Secondary math topics are more integrated than U.S. secondary math. Here is a a very detailed chart of the scope and sequence of the 4 levels for each of NEM, NSM, DM, NMC, and AM (Advanced Mathematics). But here is a rough correlation of Singapore math sequence with typically U.S. math sequence: book 1 = pre-algebra, some algebra 1 and geometry book 2 = algebra 1 and geometry book 3 = some algebra 2, geometry, some trigonometry book 4 = some advanced topics and review Additional Mathematics (AM): - first half = mostly pre-calculus including trigonometry - second half = mostly calculus. Posted October 20, 2010 Share Posted October 20, 2010 PS -- I would like to add that, while, yes it's great and convenient to stick with one program, you may find that just doesn't connect for your student. And if you do have to switch programs, it's not as difficult in high school as it is with elementary students for both you and your student to learn how the new program is set-up and make the transition. We did a number of things with older DS who loved Singapore Primary and went all the way through 6A/6B, and it worked fine. Plus, we had the great benefit of seeing math from more than one point of view! :) Below is what we used. BEST of luck in finding what works best for your family! Helpful!!! I've been wondering why I just don't stick with the Singapore sequence. It's made a good math student so far...ds seems like he's going into a math career of some sort.
