BlessedMom
Can you please recommend what we would need to purchase to be able to download audiobooks? We have never used anything but audiobooks on CD's. I know absolutely nothing about MP3 players or Ipods or whatever else may be available. I am just really really clueless, so I would greatly appreciate your wisdom and recommendations. Thank you so very much!
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
and downloads books for free from Netlibrary. Check your library's website and see if it's available. Sansa Clips are pretty easy to use and inexpensive. I've purchased refurbished ones from Woot.com for $20. hth, K
ColoradoMom
We usually get ours from iTunes but you can get them form Audible too. Or even http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:The_Audio_Books_Project for the public domain ones. iTunes just requires the iTunes software (free from Apple) and I think you download something from Audible too. You don't need an iPod to listen to your iTunes - just play it on the computer - ditto for Audible. Now if you want to put it on your iTunes you just drag it onto a play list or into your audiobooks library on your iPod. Ditto for the mp3 players. BlessedMom
Thanks NicksMama and ColoradoMom I appreciate the information! I do want something portable to download audiobooks to take along with us. Can you please recommend how much memory space (or whatever it is called) that I would need? Are there any other features that I would need? Thanks!
Catherine
Is netlibrary free, or is there a charge to download audiobooks?
Jen+4dc
The Maine (& New Hampshire) public libraries let you "check out" audio books for free, all you needis a library card. I download the book I want to my laptop and then transfer it to my MP3 player. When I finish the audiobook I just delete it and have that much more free space. I have a Sanza Fuse (4 GB) and I currently have a bunch of songs plus 5 complete audiobooks (the kids use my MP3 player, too) and still have unused space. Before paying for any kind of audible.com or iTunes, I would check and see if your library has a free program for this. Also, I prefer my MP3 player over dh's ipod because all the library's books are MP3 compatible but they are not all ipod compatible and unless you have an ipod you can't download iTunes stuff to your portable device (ie MP3 player). Cinder
Our library has Netlibrary and Overdrive for e-audiobooks. Both have their own special downloading software that you'd need to install before downloading books. I've found that with ours I need to play the downloaded audiobook for just a little bit in order for the licensing to kick in and let me listen. I have a 4G Creative Zen and I wish I had just a tad more memory. Well, only because I have a bunch of other stuff on it--I can still fit 2 audiobooks with all that. Ds has an 8G Sansa Fuze and finds he has plenty of memory for his books, but he doesn't have much else on his. We use Windows Media Player to organize and sync our mp3 players. If your car's audio has a jack for mp3 you'll just need one of those cords that will connect them. If, like us, you have a cassette player and not an mp3 jack, you'll need to get one of those tape adapters. Jen+4dc
Thanks Jen+4dc you have been very helpful. You're welcome:). We use Windows Media Player to organize and sync our mp3 players. We have a mp3 jack on our car stereo and it's so wonderful to be able to play audiobooks or music in the car without having to change cd's or bring along a ton of stuff. I got a little cord at wal-mart for under $10. Highly recommended!
Lizzie in Ma
We have a Sansa Clip for one dd and a Creative Zen for the older one. We get audio books all over the place. I don't ever install the cds that come with them, easier to drag and drop. I would never buy an Ipod because I can not abide their Itunes interface.
