Brenda in MA
Just a note about photo IDs -- We had to scramble last year to come up with a photo ID for my 15 yo when he needed to take an SAT test because my state doesn't give state-issued photo IDs to those under 16 yo. The College Board has pretty specific rules for what they accept for photo IDs on their website, so it's a good idea to check ahead. We have since gotten him a passport that has served that purpose, but the application processing time for passports is quite long. So, if you think your young high schooler will need an ID for standardized testing, you might want to plan to get one sooner rather than later! Sandra in NC
The passport website recommends renewing 9 months prior to expiration! (My son always used his passport for id before getting his Driver's permit. Now, it's fast-approaching time to renew the passport!)
Linda in NM
In New Mexico, we can get photo IDs from the DMV...my son needed one to play travel baseball last year (they're good until they're 18, I think). We also have a passport.
mcconnellboys
In the state of Kentucky, teens can go to the driver's license bureau and receive a picture ID through them, so you might check with your local DL agency to see if that's the same for your own state. If your state does not do that, you might check with local schools. If many of the schools require photo ID's you might be able to also get one done through the school for your child; another option might be to check with any local community or other colleges to see if you can get one through them. Halftime Hope
when dd needed a photo ID for a church trip to Mexico, and our state DMV was too slow to get it back by our deadline. We created our own school ID online, complete with our school name and motto, a mascot logo, the principal's signature, her class and year, and her picture. It was a lot of fun making it, and her friends liked her unique ID! Customer service was fantastic, and total cost was less than $10. :thumbup1: http://www.fullidentity.com

Thank you for passing it on. Luckily here in AZ anyone can apply for an ID card at the DMV, but back in PA the applicant had to be 16. Now does that make sense?
