I'm just starting to look into this program, so tell me everything. Which elements do you use? Which do you feel are not necessary? Is it worth the price? Do you use it alone or as a supplement to some other writing program (and which one)? Do you feel the online classes are the best, or can one get by with the manual and the Arrow/Boomerang?

Thanks.

I asked about BW a month or so ago....that is the first link I have provided. The other links are to threads that I read as I was receiving answers to what I asked. In my thread, there is someone who was very knowledgeable about BW -- perhaps you can find that response and PM her. HTH

Use the online KWB class if you think you will want someone to walk you through how to do this. In the online class, you will get 5 or so chapters of TWJ given to you in the class notes.

Use TWJ if you'd rather read it yourself, since you will get more complete information that way.

I kind of agree with Siloam in one of the threads posted--TWJ is great for showing you the process & concepts (it didn't really change the way I think about writing since I had a college professor who taught this way). But if you are looking for a curriculum and assignments, it doesn't exactly have that. It does give you tools for making up your own LA though, and in the back is an appendix with monthly assignment ideas for the 4 stages of writers.

One of the most valuable things about TWJ is the information on the stages of writing and how to help kids move from one stage to the next. This is a key that is missing from many programs, and is where people can get stuck.

I don't think much of the Arrow, haven't used the boomerang. I'd say use the free issue of the Arrow that is online, and buy them one or two at a time at most. I bought a year's worth and really didn't think it was worth the money. What you get is high quality, but the quantity isn't there--it worked out most times to about 5-6 days worth of assignments, rarely as many as 10 for us...so if you're thinking you'll buy that & have it be your whole LA, you might be disappointed in that regard. It was originally designed to show moms how to design their own LA, and it's a great tool for that. So, look at the sample and do it with your kids if possible & try one or two more out before you buy a bunch.

The boomerang might be a different experience, again I haven't used that.

The instructors for the online classes that I have chatted with have been excellent. I have taken the copywork/dictation class, and was privileged to sit in on a couple of the KWB classes. Might have my kids take one at some point to change things up here.

HTH! Merry :-)

Thanks for this. So if I need a lot of guidance, the classes would be the way to go.
