Poke Salad Annie
I just stumbled onto a book at google books called Derivations of Words, with exercises by Mary Frances Hyde. It looks great, and I'm wondering what age group would be appropriate for this?
ElizabethB
I hadn't seen it before, but glancing through it, it looks like a good resource, maybe 4th grade and up for an a on schedule student? http://books.google.com/books?id=7DEXAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=derivations+or+words+hyde&cd=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false Swan's Speller is also nice, spelling first, then Latin and Greek root study later (Latin starts at page 102) http://books.google.com/books?id=yBhKAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=swan+spelling&lr=&as_drrb_is=q&as_minm_is=0&as_miny_is=&as_maxm_is=0&as_maxy_is=&as_brr=1&cd=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Poke Salad Annie
That's what I thought, and it does look like a good resource--free too!
HappyGrace
Thanks, I really like Derivation of Words! And I would agree-4th or maybe 5th grade.

ElizabethB
thanks for these great resources. I plan to use them with my daughter this year. Which do you suggest first? the spelling book? Thanks. It depends on what you need more work on, spelling or vocab? Here are some more old spelling books if you want more: http://www.donpotter.net/education_pages/spelling_books.html
Poke Salad Annie
Thanks for the link, ElizabethB, and sorry I didn't link earlier. After reading through most of this booklet, I can't imagine a problem with introducing some of the derivations for my 9 y/old. We can start out with some of the simpler ones, then build as we go. I can imagine that this could be useful for several years, perhaps cycling through as ability increases. We will be working on spelling at the same time.
