mamapjama
It seems like this is pretty popular for the 4-6 year old group. I'm thinking of ordering for my son for next year. They have several packages - a classic, a standard and one that looks like it has less manipulatives. Which package would you recommend? Lisa in the UP of MI
The standard set has a plastic abacus and the classic set has a wooden abacus. The smaller set has all of the required materials while the larger set also includes the recommended materials.
Aurelia
It depends on the type of abacus you want. We got the standard package (plastic abacus) and it has worked just fine.
Satori
We got the RightStart A Standard with wooden abacus and we've been just fine so far. All I've purchased is the coin bag for $5, but I don't see why you couldn't use real coins for that.
siloam
It seems like this is pretty popular for the 4-6 year old group. I'm thinking of ordering for my son for next year. They have several packages - a classic, a standard and one that looks like it has less manipulatives. Which package would you recommend? Standard set. RS A and B have all the games you need to play in the manuals. Starting in RS C you go to the game book to learn about games, thus the game book is part of the upgrading from B to C package. The deluxe set generally gives you the game book now. Unless you would go looking for more games, there is no reason to get it this early. I bought the plastic abacus. It has held up well, which is saying something because I find my ds doing all sorts of things with it (namely standing on it in some form). The wood abacus are probably nicer, but they can also stick a bit, and take time to wear enough to slide easily. I just didn't want to deal with that.
