diaperjoys Posted January 25, 2010 Share Posted January 25, 2010 My son (1st grade) has been doing BJU math this year, and is doing okay. Not wonderful, but okay. Basic computation concepts tended to be very difficult for him, which made the assignments a chore. We recently added in Math Mammoth, and he really "gets" it! Does great! It clicks. And he loves the occasional game that they throw in (Some Went Hiding...) So....curriculum planning for next year... I think Math Mammoth should stay on the curricula list. But it doesn't seem complete on its own. I'd like to pair it with something, but not sure what. I was going to use Classical Math 2 put out by Logos Press (I used to teach it in a christian school before our babies were born, and it is an excellent program), but I'm thinking the combo might be too heavy. If you really want to supplement though MUS or CLE are also good. The Complete Book of Math series is an inexpensive way to go or books that you can find at your local book/grocery stores. hmschooling Posted January 25, 2010 Share Posted January 25, 2010 We don't supplement MM either. I think it's very complete and well balanced. For fun, we use the software that comes with the grade level pack. It provides skill specific drill, review, and practice through games. Also has a worksheet maker, test/review maker, and some LA games on it. Just add some manipulatives to the lower grades when working through the lesson. We're currently using Miquon supplementing with Singapore, but I'm thinking of dropping Singapore and supplementing with Math Mammoth instead. Another option would be to add in Rightstart games. Leila Posted January 25, 2010 Share Posted January 25, 2010 At this point, I would suggest to do manipulatives and games. I have never use MM but looking online I believe it is a complete program to itself. The need to supplement is really for you to decide. I think at this age I would not add anymore book work but more games and math play. Incorporate math in your daily activities. I think that will be more helpful to understand some concepts later on.
