wyomingowl
Is there a book of these words or do you just make them up? I could use some. :) Thanks
Matryoshka
I believe ABeCeDarian uses nonsense words.
Aurelia
Our phonics program has some, and I made some up on my own.
LizzyBee
We are using Barton Reading and Spelling, which includes plenty of nonsense words. But you could easily make them up yourself.
Lovedtodeath
How to Teach Spelling has a ton of them in each spelling lesson.

Charles Wallace
When my dd was younger, here's what we did: We took a cookie sheet and a bunch of magnet alphabet letters. I'd pick out a consonant and a vowel (let's say -AT), and line them up, run my fingers under them, and say, "Aaaaaah tttt. AT." Then, I'd have DD pick a consonant and I'd place it in front of the word, then say the word. Dat, cat, lat, qat, sat, kat...you get the picture. Then, I'd take a different letter and put it at the end, then have DD pick consonants and put them at the ends of the word...dat, dan, dak, dal, daq, and so forth. We'd do this until she got bored. It seemed to work pretty well, and she liked the "see-what-happens-when-I-change-it" aspect of the game.
Lovedtodeath
Ah, yes. We did something similar. We would play with scrabble tiles and the only rule was to have a single vowel in the middle. We would take turns building and reading the words.
