sleepymommy
I plan on starting copywork with ds1 as he has just finished his handwriting book. How exactly am I to go about copywork? Do I just write a sentence and then leave space underneath to write the sentence or is it supposed to be like the Startwrite examples with a light colored printing of the sentence for him to actually trace? J'etudie
I started with the lighter lines for ds to trace. I think I started 1st with the lines and then moved to him writing it on his own on the blank lines below. Now in 2nd I type quotations in cursive with StartWrite and he copies onto the handwriting paper from Italics, Beautiful Handwriting for Children (www.pennygardner.com). I print it in 60 font so it's nice and clear for him to see, but he does better writing a bit smaller so that's why I use the different paper; plus, he likes the "basement" line on the Italics paper. Medieval Mom
My ds enjoyed tracing for a very brief time, and then grew offended and said (I can do this MYSELF!). But he definitely wanted to trace at the beginning! For a few months, he might get stuck on a letter and want me to trace that particular letter for him, too. So, try having him trace at first until he feels comfortable. I have a feeling you'll know soon when he's ready to simply copy what you write/print. Good luck! Handwriting is one of ds's favorite subjects! ;)
sleepymommy
When oldest ds was in K, I made the lighter lines for him to trace. (Handwriting was not his thing.) I think I started 1st with the lines and then moved to him writing it on his own on the blank lines below. This seems like a good progression, writing isn't really ds1's thing either. My ds enjoyed tracing for a very brief time, and then grew offended and said (I can do this MYSELF!). This is what I'm worried about him saying. I don't want to go ahead and purchase Startwrite and then have him only use it for a little while. Thanks to both of you! Mommy22alyns
I type in dark print and leave blank lines for Becca to copy. I haven't done tracing for her in quite a while.
