amtmcm
My DD hates to do research. I am having trouble relating to this because I love to do research (obviously, since I like this forum). The only way I can think to teach her is to model the process for her and hope she eventually gets the hang of it and feels more confident to work independently. Are there any good, concise resources? She can write a paper with no problem - it's the collecting data and taking notes that's the problem. She wants to skip that step. Then her paper ends up being weak because she writes her opinion with no facts, or only uses one source so the data is weak. How about "Learning How To Learn" from Queen's Homeschool or "How To Do Research" from Connect the Thoughts? Has anyone used these? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. :bigear: Edited November 8, 2009 by amtmcm

lisabees
We have Connect the Thoughts - How to Research waiting in the wings. We just completed "Information, Right or Wrong". I am really enjoying the program. DS just doesn't quite get the purpose of it yet! :D If you go with Connect the Thoughts, Currclick is the place to get it. Awesome prices! 8filltheheart
I start my kids off collecting notes around 3rd or 4th grade (depends on ability). Initially, I give them short article on a specific topic to take notes from. I gradually increase it to 3 or 4 articles. FWIW.....this is what their weekly writing assignments are pulled from. I alternate between history and science topics. My current 5th grader has written about everything from deserts, to manufacturing during the Civil War, to the migration of birds, etc this yr. It is much easier to start with short weekly papers prior to expecting research papers. HTH
