Mabelen
Oh my goodness, Yes! That's what mine were, too. I wonder if everyone else is who has posted is of near European decent - meaning, of the last 2 or 3 generations. I am full European, meaning I was born and raised there, but times have changed... nowadays kids do not get medicated with alcohol either. I think my generation was the last one to get alcohol for medicinal purposes, at least in Spain.
LizzyBee
One of my sisters once had a horrible toothache (or was it an earache?) in the middle of the winter and there was too much snow to go to the doctor or dentist. My mom talked to one of the neighbors on the phone, and the neighbor told my mom how to make a hot toddy. My dad happened to have a sampler bottle of whiskey even though he rarely drank any kind of alcohol. The hot toddy helped my sister immensely. She went to sleep and when she woke up, the pain wasn't nearly as bad as it had been before the hot toddy.

We are of Irish descent on both side of the family although we have been here more than three generations.
