What do you use to teach MUSIC?

What is your favorite curriculum for elementary level music, and why? Looking for your best ideas! :)

We've moved, making it impossible for our children to continue with their former music program. It's late in the season to join co-ops, (not my favorite anyway), and I want more than learning an instrument.

I want a program that is rounded out; covering reading, writing, music, learning about the great composers, folk music, etc., etc. Is there anything out there on DVD or such that I can use at home to teach my children? I'd like a program I can use with young children and one that also has more advanced coverage of music for my older boys.

Any such thing around? I haven't been able to find it if there is such a curriculum, but perhaps YOU have found it. :bigear:

If not, what is your favorite curriculum for music, and why?

ABeka has an elementary music theory with two levels. I have the first level but haven't used it yet, since I will need to buy a flutophone (ha! I thought flutophones were a thing of the 60's). Anyway, it looked good to me; I'm not a musician, but I have had music lessons in the past and some theory myself, so I've got a bit of background. My plan is to use it before my son gets too old for it!

I've looked at BJU music but didn't like it.

There's also a course by Alfred, maybe available at CBD or Rainbow, not sure. I found the audio cd companion at a curriculum sale but don't have the theory books. My guess is that this would be a good program.

Well, those are three choices that I know of.

You might also look at Rainbow Resource, because they seem to have a lot of choices for everything.

So, maybe this isn't the biggest help, since I haven't really used any of this, but hopefully it might be a start.

All the best to you in your search!

I use a mix of the following:

http://www.flashmusicgames.com/

I also found Leonard Bernstein's Children's Concerts from the late 1950's to be great. Netflix and the library has it. It is an 8 DVD set.

I also found at our library Marsalis on Music which a DVD set and a book.

There is also software that I have heard good things about called Music Ace Deluxe that Amazon sells.

Someone else also recommended Kinderbach and if you check homeschoolbuyers co-op they may have some music programs as well.
