Jlq4
I'm trying to decide between CLE or McGuffey LA for a 5th and 8th grader. Both look very good, but I would love to hear others opinions about these LA programs. Thank you!!! Joy
Tami
CLE!!!!!! CLE = much more complete, logically laid out, better variety, comprehensive review, excellent written instruction, daily lessons. McGuffey's = blech. ;)
ezrabean2005
We've used both here. We just finished using CLE for all kids and are going to switch back to McGuffey's. For us it is just more cost effective, and simpler to use. CLE was simple to use, but was expensive (compared to one non-consumable for multiple children). HTH. They are both solid. But it is what you prefer and can afford (with the future in mind). It's simpler now for both mom and dad to just pull out the book(s) and tell the kids what to do next (usually just the next lesson). I also like that they have to respect each other's materials and time since more is shared among them. Less "this is my hard reading" vs. your "easy reading". Now those two are in the same book (one is just at the beginning and one is in the middle). Each book covers a couple of grades. So it's also nice to have less to lug around (see my thread on our organization problems) :001_smile:
Jlq4
Thank you both for replying. This gives me something to chew on. Thanks!
skaterbabs
I'm loving CLE. The price is right, the format works VERY well for our needs, it's rigorous and explains things well. It's also set up in a way that makes our end of the year reporting a breeze. We send in a portfolio in July showing "adequate progress" for each student in Math & Language Arts. Each lightunit has three quizes and a final test. The teacher guide has alternate tests if they're needed. In math the "01" lightunits (starting in 201) are a review of the previous level, making them a great option for summer review to prevent lost skills. At the end of the year we send in copies of each child's quizes & tests as their portfolio for that year.

Ellie
Well, I'm more out of the loop than I'd imagined. I didn't know that McGuffey had anything except readers and spelling. :001_unsure:
TracyR
CLE! I really like their LA curriculum very much. My oldest did well with it and I will be using it for my other girls as well.
