rowan25
I'm trying to put together my book list for next year. We're doing SOTW 1 and I want to add in some more info on the Ancient British Isles and the Ancient Norse Tribes. Does anyone know of any good books, fiction or non, dealing with these topics? I'm looking for K-4 level books for read alones and read alouds. TIA!!! Edited June 8, 2009 by rowan25
Lori D.
I couldn't come up with any historical fiction that would be appropriate for young elementary ages -- everything I could think of is for middle school -- but below is my list of non-fiction that would work well for that age. Hope something here is of help! Warmest regards, Lori D. We loved these two non-fiction books, which cover the entire world, with each culture and time period in 2-page spreads, with lots of illustrations and photos. While written for gr. 4-6, you could easily read these aloud to younger children. World History Encyclopedia by Ganeri, Martell, & Williams (published by Dempsey Parr) We have the older 1999 edition, which has a different cover (white, with different illustrations) from the more recent (2007) yellow cover: p. 32 = Megalithic Europe p. 52-53 = The Celts p. 66-67 = The Franks p. 80-83 = The Vikings at Amazon used books: http://www.amazon.com/HISTORY-ENCYCLOPEDIA-MILLON-PRESENT-MILLENNIUM/dp/1840847611/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244498104&sr=1-2 at Abe used books: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Ganeri%2C+Martell%2C+%26+Williams&sts=t&tn=World+History+Encyclopedia&x=73&y=17 Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World: From the Ice Age to the Fall of Rome by Hazel Martell (published by Kingfisher) p. 103-113 = Ancient Europe (Monuments of Megalithic Europe = 4500-1500 BC) (Bronze Age in Europe = 2300-700 BC) (The Celtic Civilization = 750BC - 500AD) (Vikings in Search of New Lands = 200-600AD) at Abe used books: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Martell&sts=t&tn=Kingfisher+Book+of+the+Ancient+World%3A+From+the+Ice+Age+to+the+Fall+of+Rome&x=40&y=13 We used the first two books on the list; we had an older edition of #2 on the list and used it in 1st/2nd grade, and it was just right age-wise. 1.
