  1. I actually found an ASL class being offered at our local school for the deaf(about 40 minutes away, not to bad). It has 4 levels. Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Levels are 14 weeks long, one day a week for an hour and a half. $145.00 per semester. You get a certificate if you pass each level. So she can get her 2 credits in. Problem is, you need to be 16. She will not be 16 until Sept of 2014. Sophomore year. I am trying to see if they will make an exception if I take the class/es with her(I would love to learn it as well), and let her start at 15. Classes resume in mid-September. Either way, if we have to wait a year that is ok. I am so happy we found a live class. The CC wanted $245.00/semester. Thanks for all the help.
  2. I will check out the above link, thank you. There are NO ASL classes taught here. Very frustrating!!!! I need to have 2 years worth though. Unless I do one year ASL, and 2 years of Latin.ETA: I did find this. Anyone use it? http://www.start-american-sign-language.com/
  3. We wouldn't be using individual Smarr guides. But the courses. Intro to Lit and so on. I have looked at WtW, and I will look at it once again. So far, I have seen many positive reviews about Smarr. I think that one has to find the right fit for their child. I am nt so sure EiL is it. But still mulling things over. Thank you so far for everyones input.
  4. My daughter wants to take this as one of her foreign language requirements. Can someone recommend a curriculum or online lessons for this?
  5. Thank you for all the responses. I just don't think my DD will be ready for the type of essay questions they ask. I showed it to her and she got a glazed look. Reading is not an issue. But when it comes down to the essay questions, I think EiL is going to overwhelm her. Sounds like Smarr might fit in the middle of EiL and LL.? I was told Smarr had writing instruction, but I wonder how good it is. Hand holding type of writing instruction?(Which is what she needs) if not, I have a separate writing program I can use.
  6. Hmmmm. I don't know. I think those questions are going to be above my daughters head. And if there isn't a a lot of hand holding she might sink. If anyone has used Smarr please chime in. :grouphug:
  7. Ohhhhhh...................okay. I didn't realize that. So if I do English II, and I feel all the book units are to much, I can drop one. Got it. That makes it much easier. Is there vocabulary work in this, or does the author assume if the child doesn't know the word, he/she needs to look it up?
  8. I am still leaning towards EiL. But I have to admit I am a little nervous that it might be *to* much for my incoming 9th grader. The author says your child should have a background in literary analysis before starting.(she doesn't other then lots of reading) Plus it looks like quite a bit of books to read, plus write all in one school year. I don't want to squash my daughters love for reading. Then someone told me about Smarr. I can only see the Short Story sample. I cannot see any other samples of her program. Can someone tell me if there is any writing instruction with this? And, I know you can get the CD-Rom at Rainbow Resource with the PDF files. And I would have to print out all the pages. It is more expensive then EiL as well plus you still have to get the books. But wondering if this might go at a slower pace? Can someone compare the two?(ETA: I am looking at the Smarr courses such as Intro to Lit and so on)
  9. Has anyone started American history first before proceeding to World?
  10. I was looking at their sample unit on the webpage. This was the sample writing assignment given:http://www.everyday-education.com/literature/index.shtml. I don't know, maybe because it is just a sample? Or maybe it is just me and I am totally clueless. :crying:
  11. At the end of the lesson of Excellence in Literature, it asks(on the sample unit) to write a 500 word essay on the following topic. This may sound like an ignorant question, but how do you know what TYPE of essay? Argumentitve? Persuasive? etc... Does it tell you in the teacher guide what kind of essay it is? Or am I, or my child supposed to determine what kind of essay they are supposed to write? (Sorry again if this is a stupid question).
  12. Techwife: No that is exactly what I needed to hear! Never to much information for me! That is an excellent plan. Yes, I was more concerned with the writing then with the actual literature. So I am going to follow your 10th grade plan for 9th and start with The Elegant Essay and Windows to the World, the proceed on to EiL. Once we get to EiL in 10th, she will have a really good foundation for writing. Thanks so much!!!! :grouphug:
  13. But this is only a one semester course, correct? Maybe spread out for a year. What about the other 3 years?
  14. I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by "pick and choose" the units? Shouldn't they be done in order because each level gets harder? Which I guess is why I was asking how we would get to World History if we started back on English 1 in 9th grade. Each level is a full year course, correct? Also, I see she recommends the Elegant Essay. But she does not mention anything about recommendations for writing research papers. All I could see was essays. The plan was to use Excellence in Writing.(Not to be confused with IEW). So I guess the question is again. Which level to start with, and should I have her start with The Elegant Essay? This program is great, but seems to be confusing as to which writing program to use and when. I do not want to have to buy 5 or 6 writing books and jump back and forth. I hope I am making sense? We are going to be starting with World History. But that is Level 5 in EiL?? I really like this program,. It is the writing that is the issue. Excellence in Writing(On DVD) covers all writing. And starting in level 5 I think would be way to hard for my 9th grader. I would imagine. Thank you.
  15. My daughter is an excellent reader, loves to read, has above average vocabulary and great comprehension skills. I think Excellence in Literature would be a perfect fit for her. But I have a few questions. She is going to be in 9th grade. There are 5 levels. If we start at the beginning she will never get to World Lit. As far as writing, she is an excellent writer.(Short stories, song lyrics) BUT, has no clue how to write essays, research papers, etc that EiL requires. My plan was to have her to Essentials in Writing Grade 9. So I guess what I am asking, is can I still start her in EiL 2, even if her writing skills are weak? Better to get EiL writing guide? Basically, I have no idea which one to start with, and what to do about writing. Is Intro to Lit even a high school course, or is it middle school?
  16. I am still wondering though, how you grade this course? Just by the questions in the book, or is there a separate test/quiz book? How is Conceptual Chem on the math though?
  17. Miss Marple: You have been SO helpful. Thank you. I as wondering. What about tests/quizzes? Are those in the books? How did you grade their work?
  18. Thank you so very much! So..............after this..........10th Bio, 11th Chem, and 12th A+P. (In 11th she will be in Algebra 2 when she does Chem). Does that sound good.?
  19. I'm sorry, but I am confused. Are you saying to JUST get the teacher book?(The link you gave above) to use with my child? I do not need a student and teacher? Because I am having a hard time matching up editions. And does it matter if the book is an older edition? I am confused about college and high school versions??? Sorry. I just want to make sure I get the correct one. And is this considered a "lab science" as well? Thank you.
  20. Okay. Conceptual Physics. This is a course with a lab? Maybe start there in 9th? THEN go to Biology for 10th, Chemistry for 11th, and Anatomy and Physiology for 12th? Where do I purchase Conceptual Physics?
  21. Well I believe most 4 year colleges need 3 lab sciences. Correct? My other question is shouldnt Bio be done before chemistry especially since Bio isn't as "mathy"?. I like the idea of doing maybe an earth science for 9th since she is big into weather and such. Any suggestions? And as far as A + P if I were to use that from apologia can it be listed on the transcript as A+P? Suggestions for a high school earth science are welcomed. You ladies are great. And sorry for all the questions!!
  22. I already graduated one. But he did all BJU and he was easy. My daughter, not so much. Basically she is weak in math so BJU for her is out. She would never keep up so I am putting together my own high school plan for her. As of now, we do not know if she is going to go to a 4 year school. If she does, it would be for the arts(singing) or possibly photography. Even with that she is not sure. So I suppose we should do a 4 year high school plan as if she is going to apply to a 4 year school. My question is this. Does the high school science have to follow the regular sequence of Biology(9th), Chem(10th) , and Physics (11th). Can we do Bio for 9th, Chem for 10th, then another science for 11th(Maybe Ecology or Geology) and then Anatomy and Physiology of 12th? Skipping Physics altogether? I would still have 3 lab sciences. Just one of them might not be physics. OR, if we do physics, can we do A+P for 11th right after Chem, then Physics for 12th? So far, We have Science Shepherd Bio(I didn't like Apologia), and I think we are going with Friendly Chem for 10th. BUT, in 10th grade she is only going to be in Geometry. Looks like Friendly Chem is perfect as it is not math heavy, but is engaging and gets the job done. And one other question, is Apologia's Human Body;Fearfully and Wonderfully Made a A+P book, OR is it Biology??? ZWe would not be doing Apologia's Bio.
  23. Well, we did Apologia Physical science this year for 8th. It was quite easy for the parent and child to use without DVD help. But besides BJU, Abeka are there any upper level sciences that come with DVD lectures?(not online classes). Or, is Apologia easy enough for a parent to help the child alone? Biology and Anatomy and Phys. would not be a problem for me. But Chemistry I would need help with(I am not good in math). I looked at Science Shepherd for Biology and like that. But I am planning ahead for 4 years of high school, and am really stuck on Chemistry and Physics. I need a DVD teacher for those.
  24. My daughter is starting biology for 9th grade. She loves science and is an excellent reader. But, she is not good in Math. Is there Biology, Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology that is not math heavy, and also includes the lab experiments on a CD-Rom?(Similar to BJU but not BJU if that makes sense). I don't think we are going to include Physics. I don't think she can handle that course even later on in high school.
