  1. We’ve done road trips since the kids were 3yo.  We love them!  But they are awesome travelers.  Assigned seats to us is easier.  Complete and utter overdose on videos; we bought DVD players.  Early on it was one they all shared.  As time went by, they each got their own.  Maybe because they never watched much tv as kids or even now, they are enthralled with watching their shows.  Like 8 hours of quiet! 🙂.

We kept trips simple.  No creative games at rest stops; I’m just not creative.  We had snacks, and ate lunch in the car to minimize stops and increase mileage.  If the kids were quietly watching movies, we drove!  We also made our stops count- so while one day might be really long (leaving really early am helps get lots of miles underway quickly), the next day might be a zoo, or national park, or someplace fun and interesting with maybe 4 hours of driving and then stopping by noon for the fun and then dinner/hotel.

Good neck pillows, kid size blankets, car seat organizer or bag for their stuffies/books/etc.  Mine had a zip tote bag they could fill how they wanted to keep with them in the car.

Good soft noise limiting kid headphones.

my kids loved doing Junior Ranger activities at National Parks across the country.

One college near us gives $5k, the other one which is ranked around 100 is not even listed under colleges that offer money for NMs. That’s the one we’re interested in due to it being close to home.

Are you only looking locally?  The out of state schools should still cover full Cost of Attendance if she gets NM; they’d waive the extra OOS cost.  Some are not as far, but they’re still outside CA. I think Washington state, New Mexico, Arizona and Idaho have good NM scholarships.

DD just got her official National Merit Finalist certificate in the mail today!  So proud of her!!!!

    Update 3/12

Decision made, DD will be attending University of Alabama On the National Merit Scholarship!

I want to say a big Thank You to all the great moms on here who post so much about how this process works.  I never dreamed she would be in this position,  with multiple great offers!  When I started homeschooling my biggest fear was getting her into college- and here we are!  The ladies on this board are amazing mentors, and I appreciate the time you take to post here and guide us!

Busymom5 - I know this is an old post but I’d love to hear about how your dd likes U of A Tuscaloosa.  And what you can tell me about her experience and such.  Our sons’ college counselor was telling us about their NM package today, and we will be planning a trip to visit.  The money and perks sound awesome!

Thanks for the update, just saw the note on the CB page about the outage?

Tell me again why do we care about the PSAT score? I looked at the colleges offering scholarships for merit, there aren't many, and frankly not enough offered. And we're in California, so it's going to be hard to get past the threshold.

It may depend where you live then.  Where we live, being a National merit finalist opens up many full rides and perks. They roll out the red carpet for NMs.  So it’s a huge deal here as long as you’re okay with not going to an elite or prestigious school.

  5. If lasting for old age, then master bedroom and bath (large enough for a possible future wheelchair/walker) and laundry should be on the first floor.  You essentially want a ranch style home in old age where everything that you really need is on one floor.

  6. I bought a pair of Merrill Vibram walking/hiking shoes when we went to Ireland.  I need comfort, traction, and to keep my feet dry.  They are not dressy looking but they made all the walking so comfortable which was my priority. Tennis shoes would have killed my back.  I can’t remember if I brought my black ballet style Crocs as a church/dinner pair or not. They are also comfy and easy to pack.

  7. Keep it simpler then.  18 people is lot to home make food for and still have time to enjoy the day.  Use Bob Evans refrigerated mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese that can be microwaved, get gravy in a carton/jar, make stovetop stuffing using the Pepperidge Farms bagged stuffing.  Just add broth and butter.  All that frees up the oven for the two turkeys.  And why not buy some nice bread or rolls from the market.  And Dollar Tree sells pretty plastic plates and silverware. While you’re there, pick up extra serving utensils for next Thanksgiving.  Keep it simpler and enjoyable.

The spike protein in the mRNA vaccines is in the pre-attachment state though. It was found that by attaching 2 proteins, the spike protein is locked in its pre-attachment phase and not able to bind with receptors. This is not an area of expertise for me, but there is a good Q&A type podcast from MedCram that discusses it. It seems that the spike protein in the mRNA vaccines may not behave in the same way as that on the SARS-CoV2 virus.

Yes, I read more articles and agree that the protein is designed with that intention. Does that apply to both the mRNA style and the J and J?  Or just the mRNA?

Also, those articles also made the point the vaccine safety is based on it going in the deltoid muscle, and that if it enters the bloodstream, there could be harm.  So wondering how the person injecting the shot down ensures it’s definitely going in the right place and if mistakes have been made?  I don’t know.  I’ve seen people debate the pros and cons of aspirating first.  I’m not a medical person by any means. I just find it all interesting as they learn more.

Thanks for sharing the link to the study. I need to go back and spend more time with it, but from an initial look, I don’t see where this has been shown to happen with the vaccine at this point. It sounds like the study was based completely on the actual virus, which we already have seen in other studies has this issue with the spike proteins interacting with DNA, but thus far the vaccine has not been shown to do it. sounds like they are speculating that it could happen with vaccines that use the full length of the spike protein based on what they saw with the virus. Frustratingly, when I look for more information about the study, everything that gets pulled up are conspiracy theory sites explaining with many scare words about how the study found that the vaccine damages DNA 🙄. When that wasn’t the point of the study at all.

I’m reading that it is the spike protein itself causing the issue with the DNA .  Both covid and the shot produce the spike protein.  I wouldn’t think there is a difference in how you got the spike protein.

Ok, this is another idea - although I lose the big coffee table to play games at, etc. It does add room for more wall based storage - I threw in another Kallax cube shelf type thing, but could be something else. You can't put the tall bookshelves on that wall though if you have the desks under the window, they block access.

Can the couch face the other way?  I don’t like the back facing the window.  Could you face it toward the wall with the tv?  And then would you have room for a coffee table in front of it?

I’d put the black bookcases next to each other and get more of that tall size for that wall, all next to each other to get the most storage.  Can the other low brown one go next to the other low brown one?

Oh, and I'd do an Alex desk for myself, since only one person has to sit there, so don't need extra leg room. So I'd have the narrow alex drawers as part of my desk, maybe the ones with the file cabinet built in, then the wide alex drawers for the printer to sit on and to store all the types of paper we have, then each kid gets a set of alex drawers (although DD4 might want the ones on wheels that are a bit smaller). Map above the Kallax (it's a 2x4 cube unit, not what is pictured).

You’re not taking advantage of all the wall space you have for storage.

I’d move the sofa to the middle of the room and float it, facing the tv.  Move the two black bookcases to either side of the brown cube thing.  Add more to fill that wall if needed.  Put two of the kids desks where the couch and bookcases currently are.  This will free up a huge wall to add bookcases/storage u it’s.  Leave one kids desk and printer on that wall. Use wireless printing.

  12. I like this.  It’s almost the same as your current room.  And the couch away from the walls would leave the wall behind the couch for more shelving/storage.  Though I might try an L shaped couch. And your desk by the smaller window.  A tv could go behind those doors of that storage unit they have. I know you don’t have that whole wall of windows for the kids desks, but you could still use the same setup.  And even out shelving above the desks without windows

  13. I would first get them checked to make sure the prescription is correct and that it was made properly.  If they are, either give it a little time (it does take time to get used to), or ask for a different progressive lens.  I opted for the more expensive one with the wider fields of vision instead of the basic.  Ask the optometrist to show you.

  14. One tip we used was to have multiple little potties all around the house, at least one per room, so if one started going you could quickly move them to the nearest potty.  My one ds starting going in the playroom, we hurried him to the potty in the room, he got a drop or two in the potty and was thrilled with himself!  I just bought a bunch of used ones for the training (we did the weekend training).  I had ‘new’ fun books for them to look at on the potty to relax to go poo.  In the days leading up to potty training, I watched their diet- cut out any constipating foods, gave foods to help the process. They had special Elmo underwear that they loved.  We watched the Elmo potty training video a lot in the weeks before training.  Elmo was a big help to our three 🙂

    good luck!
