  1. We are on Week 10 of CW Homer. We started last year and are picking it back up in the middle this year. I'm wondering if ds is supposed to be applying what he has learned with noun copia and grammar change to his writing projects? Also, we are getting more into the accidentals/essentials material, which he understands. However, he is not really changing much when doing the actual writing projects. He is mostly just doing a straight retelling of the story and sometimes his writing is word-for-word from the model that he remembers and writes. I'm not sure if we are going about this the right way? Any advise?

  3. We switched from AAS to PZ (Phonetic Zoo), and ds10 likes it better. I liked AAS, but he found it tedious.
  4. I used SL3 with WP AS1 this year. I bought the WP IG new and the SL IG used. I found almost all the books for both programs at our library and only purchased the ones that were used throughout the year (such as WP's American Story and Sonlight's Landmark), any workbook-style books (such as Sonlight's Story of the USA), and books I could not find at the library or substitute. All in all, I would say that I only ended up actually purchasing fewer than 10 books, and most of those I got from Amazon and a couple used off the WTM boards.
  5. Is there a curriculum or program out there that teaches kids basic word-processing skills? I'm not looking for typing but more like something that teaches how to create and edit documents in programs like Word or Open Office or even WordPad. Ds is only 10 years old, so I don't want a full-blown tutorial on every little feature--just something basic. TIA:001_smile:
  6. We did one lesson per day. If I felt he struggled with the lesson we did that same lesson again the next day. I also kept a list of the words that he struggled with and we reviewed those every couple days until he was consistently spelling them correctly.
  7. Every year we start a timeline for whatever period in history we are studying with absolutely no interest on the part of ds. About halfway through the year it falls by the wayside. This year, i have decided to let go of the timeline (GASP). I like the idea of a timeline, but it just doesn't add anything for us.
  8. Can anyone compare these 2 science programs in terms of the experiments, ease of use, depth, etc?
  9. Would this program be too advanced for 10- or 11-year olds? I know that it is marketed toward a slightly higher age range. Is the reading advanced? Would the labs/questions be too difficult at younger ages? Thanks for any advice. I have been waiting for Colors to come out, but I think ds will be at the target Rainbow age by then!:D
  10. DS10 seems to be having trouble applying what he has learned in his spelling and grammar classes to his writing. For example, we just finished a spelling class that focused on doubling the consonant to protect a short vowel when adding a vowel suffix. He did well in the class, but in the very next class he wrote a sentence that used the word "hopping," which he spelled h-o-p-i-n-g. He often does the same thing with punctuation and capital letters, not so much with punctuation anymore but capital letters still seem to be a problem. I'm wondering if WWE is a program that might be useful in addressing this problem. I've never used it before and don't know much about it or, if it would be helpful, what level to choose? TIA, Katie
  11. I had read several posts regarding Singapore's Challenging Word Problems (CWP). However, when I went on their website to have a look I noticed that they are "permanently out of stock" for most levels, including the levels I was interested in looking at (3 and 4). Can anyone recommend other supplements with challenging story problems?

  14. Really? Could you tell me more about how you find them so different (apart from the obvious, such as different books, reading levels, spines, etc.)?
  15. With Elementary Spanish on Discovery Streaming, do the levels 1/2, 3/4, etc., indicate grades or actual levels? If an older child with no prior Spanish was to begin Elementary Spanish, would he/she begin with 1/2?
  16. We have looked at the samples of the Time Travelers readings. I also found the AS1 spine at the bookstore, and we looked at that. Ds liked them both, so I couldn't use that as a way to decide. As for the cost, I am thinking that AC1 and AA1 would be about the same. I would have to purchase the IG and the Time Travelers, since we will be using the library for most of the rest. For AS1, I would have to purchase the IG and the craft kits.
  17. Ds10 will be doing American history this year for the first time. I understand that the All-American program is a sort of combination of AS1 and AC1 for families with children of varied ages. Would it make sense for me, with just one child, to order AA1? I am completely unable to make a decision between AS1 and AC1. I like the resources from both of them. Ds is a good reader. In fact, he has read a book from each program and enjoyed them both. Most of the books from both programs are available at my library, so I really need to order just the IG and the exclusives/consumables/craft kits. But which program...AS1, AC1, AA1? :banghead: HELP!
  18. If you do decide to buy the newest edition, you can probably save money buying through Rainbow Resources as opposed to buying directly from Saxon.
  19. Ds doesn't really **like** Wordly Wise, especially the last exercise in which he has to read a passage and answer the questions using the vocabulary words. However, since starting with it this past year, he often comes to me and points out words in his reading that he has studied with Wordly Wise. That tells me it's getting the job done! I'm planning to continue with it.
  20. I have a brand-new copy of Saxon 6/5 Homeschool, and the copyright inside says 2005, 3rd edition.
  21. It takes my son about an hour to complete the drill, read the lesson, do mental math, lesson practice, and mixed practice.
  22. I have been using R&S for grammar only. We added IEW for writing, AAS for spelling, etc.
  23. We used EG last year. It took about 15 minutes maximum. As another post mentioned, there are extensive reviews and tests in the lesson book without having to buy the test booklet. If you want to purchase just one book (TM or student), I'd go with the TM. It has all the student pages included.
