  1. My son loves Cover Story.. which is a huge plus..! However he chose to do his story on Minecraft.. which is fine! The lessons this week are giving us a huge problem..the interview.. Lessons 19-21 He is at a loss as to how to find someone to interview about Minecraft. He says, rightly so, he cannot contact the creator of Minecraft to interview.. and he says his Minecraft friends won't be able to answer questions about the game etc.. How can I help him with this? thanks
  2. Can someone compare Harcourt Social Studies (which I believe is their public school line) with their homeschool line.. Horizons.. (not to be confused with the Christian publisher of that name) I'm curious how the programs compare.. I need a quick, overview program.. without a lot of fuss.. (just these two programs.. ) thanks!
  3. I've considered it for my first grader and then decided to wait.. while some of the words are easy.. and he could do them.. I think the more complicated versions of the words would throw him....that and all the writing would probably do him in at this point...;)
  4. I ended up deciding that MBtP wasn't for us...and we ended up joining a Classical Homeschool Co Op and the kids are all taking core courses through them..
  5. This is my tentative schedule for my 8th grader this coming school year Language Arts: Wordly Wise 3000 7 to 8, Memoria Press literature Units and Blackbird and Company Literature Units, Cover Story Math: Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 Social Studies/Geography: Memoria Press Men of Rome to Men of the Middle Ages, Memoria Press Geography 1 to 2 Science: He is attending a Consortium Class (co-op) for science Foreign Language: Latin and if he will allow.. continuation of French Also: Typing, Life Skills (aka Home Ec), Health, Arts
  6. Ah ha! Yes it is.. I hadn't checked the back of the student workbook.. just the teacher guide and the reader. Thank you!
  7. We just started Memoria Press Men of Rome.. is there a pronunciation guide anywhere for the names.. I am sure we are not saying most of the names correctly... thanks
  8. So.. Quick summary.. we have been using Moving Beyond the Page for a year and a half.. Last year it was literature and history units for the latter half of the year.. This year I used them as our core curriculum..in the 5-7. 8-10 and 11-13 levels (for 1st, 4th and 7th grades) I like the program.. but I don't /love/ the program. and I'm thinking I don't want to spend the $$ on it again for the next levels.. I do think learning happened.. but I don't feel it was as rigorous or deep as I wanted things to be.. I am eyeing Memoria Press Classical Core and wondering if it will just be too much of a shock to my kids... I would Sub out Math...we are using Math Mammoth and Teaching Textbooks here and it is working well. My older two would not need the science as they will be taking science courses through a Consortium here... My oldest is loving Cover Story.. but we can wait to start the One Year Adventure Novel and give Memoria a try for writing... So... Looking at the Jr K program for the youngest.... Do I get the grade 2 program..? My soon to be second grader is a voracious reader.. great phonetic decoder and very good at spelling. Physical writing is very hard for him (delayed motor skills). Would the 5th and 8th grade programs be too intense for my older two...? I need something that I can set them to do their work.. and they can do much on their own.. with discussion of their answers with me etc... My oldest is getting better at discussion but getting him to answer deeply is often like pulling teeth.. do I try the 7th grade program with him instead..? If I do go with this.. I do think I'll have to sub out some of the writing etc with lower levels only because neither have done these programs before (they both did IEW SWI A at one time).. Or is there something else i can look at.. something that will give me open and go plans.. not too heavily religious (I've ruled out Abeka, BJU, Horizons) that won't break the bank.. but will still offer a nice focus on literature, thinking, history and writing...?
  9. I checked the CD and there is a 6B.. is that the revision?
  10. if we bought the Light Blue through the Homeschool Buyers Coop this last time (January '14) do we have the revision or how do we go about getting it? I got a hard copy of the light blue program...
  11. His spelling is quite good, I think. Right now he has 12 books out from the library..and reads one every day or two..he loves to read at night..I hear him laughing out loud sometimes when he should be asleep!!
  12. My first grader is a strong reader. He can read a Magic Tree house book in an evening and retell it to you. He is a very good phonetic decoder as well. We have used, and enjoyed all 3 levels of All About Reading and are wrapping up level 3 now. What next? Do I look for a "reading program" for him... or do I try to find something that switches focus to comprehension based activities? Do I let him just read for pleasure every day and not worry about anything more formal..? His fine motor ability isn't great so a program that requires a lot of writing wont' work at this time (and we are working on handwriting etc).. So, once we finish with AAR 3.. what should we do next? (AAR 4 isn't coming out for a while...) Thanks for your thoughts!
  13. Thanks! I was looking at the Diamond package... Do you know if you can rebuy the esubscription if you wanted to use the program after the 5 years? Would you check in again after you have used it a bit and report back???
  14. We use this as our "complete" curriculum.. It is a very good fit for our family. Currently we are using the 5-7, 8-10 and 11-13 levels. Is it perfect..? No.. but I really don't think anything is... But it is a far better fit for us than any of the other curriculum I've used. I wish the science was more.. in depth (and that the experiments consistently worked).. there are other, tiny things.. typos...sometimes there are not answers to some of the questions.. but I've also noticed the revised guides do a better job than the previous ones..
  15. Has anyone used the Supercharged Science Mastery Program? I've always liked the look of Supercharged Science but the monthly fees plus the gathering of supplies.. etc.. held me back.. However it looks like the Mastery Program is a bit different? That is is more self paced..DVD driven and not all online at certain times...? Plus it seems to come with all the materials.. I am wondering if this would fit my need for a good, solid, science program for my kids (currently first, fourth and seventh)... I need something that is solid, factual, open and go, easy to implement, interesting, current and fun... a hard bill to fit. If it can last a few years for each kiddo.. even better.... Does this program allow say.. a first grader to work through it and then revisit it a few years later and get more depth out of it..? or is it sort of use once per kid and done sort of thing..?? The cost is.. wow.. but if I can make it work for 3 (and soon 4) kids over a few years.. it becomes much more cost effective.. as I'd be buying separate programs for all of them each year.. and it would probably work out similar in cost Thanks
  16. I do agree this is an important skill and I am glad that it is being presented.. I did think the lessons were fine.. the rules presented for determining significant digits were clear.. and there was plenty of practice.. however nothing like the question asked.. it seems a very out of the blue type of question.. not inline with anything gone over in the chapter.. I could see if there was a decimal in the number.. then it would have been an application on the rules learned to solve the problem... but taken as written.. no.. very ambiguous..
  17. This is from the new course 2 Math in Focus curriculum.. I think..and I'm just guessing.. that this question was something they added to promote some outside the box thinking...real world problem solving.. perhaps.. I'm not really sure.. I can think of several ways that this could have been written with clearer instructions for the student... Aside from this question.. we've been happy with the content...admittedly we are not that far in.. but DS is getting more out of it than what we were using previously... I'm not going to sweat the question.. I am sure that if he needs a deep understanding of significant numbers for a career.. he will get exposure to it again.. ;)
  18. He meant there are 9 digits.. There are seriously NO additional instructions to this question.. I typed it out exactly as written (barring the abbreviations) We even went back into the chapter and looked over the chart with the rules for figuring out significant digits and I googled (and got the page referenced above) and read that.. Really bad question, imho....(and it is a new "Common Core" math question too.. bah
  19. Interesting.. the test answer says there are 4... My son argued that there would be 9 with the information given.. and I said it was impossible to tell because of what you said.. There was no statement saying "when a number is known to be rounded, none of the trailing zeroes can be considered significant"..... I think that I will not mark him wrong!!
  20. Here is the problem.. (grade 7 math) If the speed of light in a vacuum is approx 300,000,000 kilometers per second, which is rounded from 299,792,458 kilometers per second. What is the maximum number of trailing zeros that can possibly be significant?
  21. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never would have thought to look in the back of the student book.. DUH!!!
  22. We are using MIF course 2, grade 7 this year. I have both the new text and teacher guide.. In the teacher guide, for some problems it says "See Margin" then I look to the margin of the teacher guide and it says.. for 5, 7, and 9.. See Additional Answers WHERE are these Additional Answers??!!?? Thanks!
  23. 2a as in Course 2.. grade 7 We are keeping it and I do think that, while it might be a bit hard at first, this is a good step for our homeschool... I am also transitioning the younger children into the grade 1 and 4 books...We've been using Saxon math for several years.. but I was never really happy with it or the results.. lots of OK work in the math.. but no transfer...Hopefully this will help with higher level thinking
  24. What would you suggest? We have First Start French too... I need more coffee..lol.. I have The learnables....French 1 I have also been looking at So You Want to Learn French
