We had all the "stuff" (slate, wood pieces, etc.) but we never used them. We used the workbook and just discussed how they went together. I like the method of teaching and am using the cursive for my older kid now, too. I would skip the extras and order them later if you need them. Worst case you pay extra shipping (or you over order and have to return ship, LOL!).

Looked like a good week to me! I think I am having Maine envy though - my parents used to live in Brunswick and moved to NY. No more trips to the coast. My DS (5) loves his Leapster. I *loathed* the idea of getting one - but for him (and audio/visual learner) he really learns a lot from it. We limit the time he spends on it (the kids get 30 minutes of screen time per day after school and chores - and they have to pick what they want to do - any complaints and it's banned until further notice). It's great for the car. I would also highly recommend Snap Circuts Jr. My son LOVES LOVES LOVES his and plays with them all the time. Our set was $14 ($25 at Hobby Lobby but used a 40% off coupon). LOVE them. He's also a huge fan of Playmobile anything. HTH! Happy Birthday!
