  1. I need help on how to best parent/teach my 8 yo dd. She is a very shy child. Will not talk in public. She had a Dr. appointment the other day and the Dr. asked her her birthday and she just stared at him like a deer in headlights. But it goes beyond shyness. It is a problem with her school work. She freezes up and WILL NOT communicate answers. For example, this morning we were working on the Latin stem pre- with the word precede. I gave several examples of "this precedes that" then asked the kids to share something that precedes something else. My 10 yo did it, my 5 yo did it. She just freezes. It's not that she doesn't know, I feel like it's that she can't speak outloud what she knows in her head. Or maybe that the pressure of speaking out loud blurries her head so she can't think. I do not even try to get a narration out of her...I'm sure I'm making it worse because I find it incredibly frustrating. I ask something simple that I know she knows the answer to and she just won't spit it out. She does better if she writes it, and she can talk about the word "precede" later in a conversation context. So I know that she understands, it's just the pressure having to answer on the spot I guess. She also really struggle to communicate her emotions. Any thoughts of insights?

  2. My rising 6th grader wants to do Latin. I have never been able to fit it into our schedule and I told her we can't do it. Last night I found her reading a latin dictionary and decide I should let her have a try! I have practically no time I can commit to helping her with this. Is there a program with videos, or something written to students that an eager self started could manage on her own?

  3. While in Northern Ireland we also went to Belfast which was really cool. We took a tour of the main prison where they housed the terrorists from the bombings in the 90's. They also have a fantastic titanic museum. The titanic was built in Belfast and the museum is on the very spot.

  4. We lived in London for 2 years and did a fair amount of traveling around. I absolutely cannot recommend Wales enough. It was the most wonderful vacation I have ever had- now our weather was perfect so it all hinges on that. We stayed near Tenby. The beaches are the most beautiful in the world. Most require an easy hike over ponds and white cliffs which make it even more enchanting. You then emerge in these beautiful beach valleys with like 10 other people. We loved barafundle beach and stackpole. Ireland isn't on your list, but Antrim County in northern ireland was also fantastic. Rugged coastline, where grassy cliffs meet crashing waves and sheep climb everywhere. We went to the Giant's Causeway and the Carrickarede (sp?) Rope bridge. That rope bridge was AMAZING!

  5. Our school district offers free summer school for the month of June and I am thinking about enrolling my kids but could use some more thoughts on the matter. We live walking distance to the school and my kids went there last year. The summer school program is Monday through Thursday 9-3. I have heard that it's more relaxed than normal school- more project/theme based. My kids are currently finishing grades 5, 2, and k. The reasons I'm considering it are mainly 1) to give me a break 2) to give them something to do and 3) for them to see some friends from the neighborhood and friends they made at school last year. I'm just not sure if I will regret it and want to just hang out/relax. We have no plans for June. We usually get a pool membership and just go swimming a couple of times a week. Any thoughts?

  6. Thanks for these suggestions. It is helpful to clear my head a bit. If we did the kitchen we would still take a vacation, it would just be driving distance and more camping-ish. A vacation is expensive for us because we have 4 kids, so 6 flights, lodging big enough, and a rental van for a month.

  7. Based on the sale of some property we have about 30k that we are willing to spend on either a kitchen reno or a family vacation- the vacation would not be that much but we do have to choose one or the other. Dh is a college professor and has the 2019-2020 school year off from teaching for a sabbatical. We are thinking about taking a month and renting a condo in Southern California. -OR- we can reno our ktichen. Our house was built in 1969 but the last owners remodeled the kitchen in 2003. The kitchen is fine, it's not horrible, but it's definitely not my style (brown granite counters and ornate oak cabinets). My pro/con list is that the kitchen reno adds value to the house whereas the vacation money is just gone. Also, the renovation will benefit us for years to come instead of a one time thing. However, I feel like to choose the reno is to choose material things over experiences with my kids who are only young once :( Also, we have this unique opportunity with dh's sabbatical. I need opinions!!

  8. I have a 5th grade dd who loves writing. She writes a lot on her own for fun. We have done narration and copywork to this point. This year we are doing MCT island level, so she has lots of grammar instruction. I was trying to follow their writing lessons, but think I'd rather add in the CAP material instead. Would you recommend starting at the beginning? Or jumping in somewhere?

  9. I am starting Rod and Staff math with my dd’s, grade 5 and grade 2. Odd has had a variety of math programs, Miquon, public school, and math mammoth. We started math mammoth this year with grade 4- so a year behind. We are about 1/3 of the way through the book, we started in August. I have purchased grade 4 Rod and Staff for her. I am wondering if I should start at the beginning, or skip ahead a bit. She is already a bit discouraged that this is her 3rd time starting a 4th grade math program, and she is in 5th grade. And R&S seems easier that MM was, so she could definitely do it. But the strength of the program seems to be the drill, and I’m wondering if we need to start at the beginning of the level?

Similar question for 2nd grader, the beginning of the book is on 2+1 and seems really simple. Should we skip ahead of do the program as designed?

  10. This has been very helpful. My problem isn't so much that I need something less time consuming. As I've thought about it I've realized that the problem is that I need more explicit instructions on how I should teach it. I am fairly mathy, I would have loved Miquon as a kid. But I really struggle with communicating the ideas because it's just "logical" to me. I went ahead and bought rod and staff for both girls. The suggestions for how to supplement with more conceptual math are great ideas. Thanks again!

  11. I used Miquon math for 3 years with odd, and now am in year 2 of it with ydd, but it’s just not working for us anymore. I have 4 lo’s and I just feel like we don’t have time for the “discovery” method. So, since there is 0 explanation in the text and I don’t have too much time to sit with her and help her figure it out, she has just become confused and frustrated. After Miquon odd switched to math mammoth and I think it works well for her. I am considering using that for ydd as well, my main concern is that it will get monotonous. Can we really use it for the next 6 years? At the very beginning of our journey I tried Singapore and I just couldn’t figure out how to use all the books. I have looked online at beast academy and I think dd would find the comic style confusing/distracting. I think she needs something explicit and straightforward. Yet I do love the understanding that they receive from Miquon. Where should I go next? What else should we look at?

  12. 1st through 3rd grade we used Miquon Math and really enjoyed it. This last year- 4th grade, dd went to public school. We are going back to homeschool in the fall and will be starting 5th grade. We planned to do 5th grade math mammoth but dd took the placement test and did not pass the 4th grade level. I’m not really sure what happened with her math this last year, she got an “a” in class, but when we go through the math mammoth material she definatly isn’t ready for it. She is young for her grade, will be turning 10 next month. She is a bright kid and does well with school. We started going through the 4th grade book at the beginning of summer trying to catch up for the fall, but I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it to speed through that book during the summer (and probably a bit of the beginnning of next year), or if we should just take a summer break and do 4th grade math over again next school year. I would prefer to just do it next year as we’re just tying to squeeze it in here and there and I don’t feel like we’re doing it justice. Also, I’m afraid she’ll burn out if we spend the next 2 years trying to catch her back up. I’m not sure what the math schedule looks like going forward, if she repeats 4th grade math will she be behind for high school math? What year would she then begin pre algebra?
