  1. We are doing 1st grade this year, and I plan to study history chronologically, but we treated this year as an introduction. 1st we did about 2 months on basic geography. We studied the 7 continents, just picking 1 country from each continent to give us a basic understanding of what people in that area look like, eat, how they live, what animals live there, etc. We would watch videos, check out books from the library, and I had at least 1 hands on craft for each continent. We ended with North America. This was in November, so we did some Pilgrim work using Evan Moore history pockets and studied Thanksgiving. We also used October to study basic American government and the kids came with me to vote in November. December we kind of too a break and just did Christmas stuff for S.S. Now we are looking at native american tribes also using Evan Moore history pockets and reading Kaya American Girl (we also read Felicity when studying America). When we finish the Native American unit, probably in a few weeks, we will begin SOTW. I think this gave dd a good grasp of where places are, how the world looks, and the concept of cultures. I didn't think she would understand Ancient Egypt without some foundational info first.

  2. I need help!! I am pulling my hair out agonizing over this decision. I would like to use SOTW because it looks so simple- read the chapter, do activity book, extra books if desired. I would really like to use the audio recordings- just 1 less thing that I have to do 1-on-1! I just WISH that it incorporated bibical history!! So, I have been looking at Simply Charlotte Mason's history program, I love the way that it weaves Biblical history in, but it just seems more complicated, I would need the study guide plus several books, I would have to do my own activities (my kids love hands on activites), it just doesn't seem as simple. Plus, I would have to do it all one on one. I was thinking I could do SOTW this go round, and then MOH the next round since it includes Biblical history, I just feel guilty about leaving it out. We are reading a Children's Bible to our kids, so they do know the history that way, I just don't want it to look like the Bible is just "stories" and SOTW is REAL history. Any suggestions?

  3. Dd is 6 yo, and I am searching for some history help. Here is what I want:

    - A not-to-intensive spine. I want a lot of wiggle room for us to do in depth sudies, follow rabit trails, pursue interests.

    - integrates the Bible would be helpful, but not necessary, I could integrate it myself if I had to.

    - a great supplemental reading list. I want to include books like Pope and Osbornes Odyssey series.

    - as much planned out for me as possible.

    Suggestions?

  4. Dd is 6yo and 1st grade. We did singapore for kindy and almost finished with book 1a, but it just wasn't clicking for us. So I bought Math Mammoth and Miquon thinking I would use them together, but I just don't get this multiple curriculum for 1 subject thing. How do you use Miquon with another program? Can I just use it alone?
