  1. This is super helpful! Thank you! I had the same impression from my "research" into HOD.
  2. Thank you for the suggestion. I went to the link you added and I didn't see any manipulatives that go with CLE. Do you just add your own? Any suggestions?
  3. So, I need suggestions for what to use in math before TT starts :) I found A+ interactive (Tutorsoft) and it had decent reviews. I'd like to keep with the interactive, audio lesson format. However, I am most concerned with a smooth transition to TT in 3rd grade so I'm open to other things.
  4. I recently discovered HOD and I am trying to learn all I can about it. I did various searches on the forum to see what is "the hive" consensus, but I couldn't sift through the results. I'm specifically interested to hear about the sufficiency of (or any other comments) HOD scheduled writing. Thanks, as always! You all are so helpful!
  5. I was planning to do distance learning videos for grade 1 phonics through BJU. But I notice that reading, handwriting and grammar are also included, for a whopping 60-70min video! Yikes! I only plan to use phonics portion and it seems like such a waste of money to get the whole course. Are there any other video phonics courses that include actual daily instruction? Even software would be alright as long as the lessons are taught with audio.
  6. This is almost exactly what I was going to write. From the library part, to Bob books to open and go and the markings. :)
  7. Sounds like you all are surprised by the negative reviews, too. We'll give them a try. Thanks :).
  8. So I was ready to get a boxed set of these books to use as read alouds for my K5 son....then I started finding several negative reviews on amazon. So I thought I'd check with the hive :) Anyone feel that these books model bad behavior/habits? If so, is this left unchecked/"no lesson learned " I read a couple in my own childhood and don't recall anything of the sort. Just wondering because I was really surprised to read negative reviews.
  9. I've found some posts stating people liked it or loved it, but I can't figure out what kind of resource it is. There are no online descriptions or peaks inside. Is it a text to read? A collection of stories? How is it used in the overall program? Thanks, again!
  10. How connected are the science lessons in ADV thru 1850 manuals? If I want to just use MFW for history, Bible, arts, reading, could I do that and just use my own choice for science?
  11. So I know you can use Khan academy to supplement any math, but before I pick one, have you all found one that Khan complements very well (both schedule and content)?? Fwiw, it's for a first grader. Thank you all so much for being so gracious. I ask alot of questions!
  12. What are the Phonics Pathway readers? I can only find the main curriculum book.
  13. Does this exist? I know about Kahn academy and have read about it here. It seems like some folks feel like it can stand alone, but the majority feel it is for supplementing other programs. Is there an online, stand alone elementary math program (with video instruction) I could use before TabletClass?
  14. If you start with little hearts in k, do one guide a year from there, what do you use in 8th? If you just keep going on to high school book, what do you do for high school?
  15. Thank you! These aren't the ones I saw before, so if someone else posts those I'll have a stash!! :)
  16. I think I've come across a thread before that linked to some online readers for beginners. I did a couple quick searches and couldn't find it. Did this sound familiar to anyone? I think they were printable too but not sure.
  17. I've been looking at options for 1st grade spelling and they all look so much like the phonics workbooks I'm planning to use. SO...do I need a separate program for spelling? I'm just thinking of 1st grade, when there is so much phonics instruction. It makes sense to do spelling other years, but it seems like a lot of double-doing to add it in first. Thoughts? Anyone else considered/tried skipping a formal spelling program during phonics?
  18. I read that the Great Homeschool Convention (Cincy) offers a free pass or something if you volunteer to work in the children's workshop, registration, etc. Does TTD - Sandusky do something similar? I don't see anything like that on their website, but thought I'd out it out there :) I'm only interested in the exhibit hall, no workshops. Thanks!
  19. I know this is an old thread but I can't find newer content. I'm planning to use these books. Based on the samples I found online, it looks like they don't include longer verses/passages for copy work. Is that true? Will this resource just teach letter strokes mainly?
  20. Has anyone watch online classes and used eTextbooks on this device? My husband and I really like it but would like to purchase just one device for our son. He is going to have some online classes through BJU. Anyone used it with vitasource bookshelf?
  21. Thank you! Great thoughts :) My son tends to say things like, "we already did that" or "you said that yesterday/last week/etc" which is why I was concerned that 4-5 years of building and review may drive him batty :) Review is good and necessary, to a point.
  22. ...anyone else bothered by the sequence of history topics covered in BJU? Grades 1-5 cover and repeat American history, ancient/world isn't covered until 6th-7th, then back to US in 8th. Is anyone aware of a reason to hold off on world history until 6th!? I'm really thinking if only doing HS for grades 1&2 and then going elsewhere until high school. Anyone else concerned about this? If you tweaked things to be a little more cyclical with BJU, how did you do it?
