  1. I ordered this book for my DS. We are mostly wanting to practice due to the fact he has never done a fill in the bubble type of thing. This book has a total of 6 tests. I am not sure if that makes a difference to you, but I thought there would be more to it personally.
  2. My kiddos and I were at my aunt's house along with several other members of my extended family. Most of my family calls the nighttime meal supper, but my immediate family calls it dinner. So as I was tell DD(3) that we were trying to figure out what we were having for dinner my mom was saying we were trying to figure out what we were having for supper. This confused DD so I just told her it was okay they mean the same thing. She then looks at me and says, "So they are synonyms"
  3. So my 5 year old DS has recently started doing this finger tapping thing. He is not tapping on furniture but is touching each of his thumbs to his pinkies, his ring fingers, his middle fingers and then back to ring fingers and then pinkies... before repeating over and over again. He does it all the time. When I was growing up I did something similar, but not nearly as all the time as he does. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this something that points towards anything else? I was going to google it, but don't even know what to call what he is doing. Thanks for any thoughts! Leslie
  4. This post is SO what I needed to read right now! My 5.5 year old DS has always pushed me, but for the last couple weeks it has gotten SOOOOO much worse. I am not the calmest of parents and I know I need to work on not letting him push my buttons. He is also having a lot of melt downs and what I call come aparts lately. My least favorite thing he does is when he is completely disrespectful in front of either my mom or mother-in-law. They have both made comments basically letting me know that I am not doing a good enough job as a mother and when he acts that way that doesn't help. Of course, neither of them have walked in my shoes. I know I am a more hands on mom than my mom and my mil has said I work with DS way more than she worked with her kiddos, so I can't be that horrible.
  5. NittanyJen That is totally something that my DS would come up with. He is SO into smells. I know that can go along with being gifted, but with him it seems to be a little extreme.
  6. Thanks. I was hoping I was just missing something easy. It is good to know that he would be in the top 1% though.
  7. Okay let me start by saying that I know test results are not the be all, end all. My son was tested in order to get into a gifted preschool program last year and since then it has bugged me b/c others know where their child fits and I don't really. I see labels like highly gifted, exceptionally gifted, etc. The test that my son took is the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS) This test uses completely different labels. Which is fine, but I want to see how my son lines up. I think later in life that will make a difference when trying to get him into programs (if he choses to do so) plus I am curious by nature and like to see where things fit. I love him where ever that place is, just want to know. I hope that makes sense. At any rate I round this chart (look on page 40) http://www.myschoolpsychology.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/An-Introduction-to-the-RIAS-Jim-Gyurke.pdf My son scored a 143. Which puts him well into the highest category (Significantly Above Average). How can I figure out how this relates to the more typical labels I hear? I am decent with math, but am no where near as gifted as my son, so this is probably something easy to figure out and I am just not seeing it. Thanks in advance! Leslie
  8. Now that I know about this thread I keep hearing DC say things that fit here :) Just now: DS was reading a joke, riddle, brain teaser book. He read the following joke - The Little vampire could never gain weight. .... His eating was all in vein. I had early on a simliar joke that vampires bite necks to get blood. After reading this joke he said (or something very similar to), "The most blood is in the head so they should bite the head not the neck." Pretty sure most 5 year olds don't think about much less know about there being a lot of blood in the head.
  9. So I am wanting to use SM for DS this year. I ordered just the kinder workbooks thinking I could check them out and if they were too easy I could later use them for DD. The problem is I let DS see them without me specifically teaching him with these books he has basically finished them in 2 days. So now I am looking to order 1A and 1B. A friend said I should order the workbooks and textbooks and watch videos online for how to teach if I need to. What else if anything should I get? I don't want to spend tons since he will probably fly through it, but don't want to skimp on something important either. He currently has done Math U See Primer, Alpha, and working on Beta if that helps any. Thanks in advance! Leslie
  10. I can not count how many times we have been asked how old DS is. I think my 2 are opposite the norm for their genders. DS stands out as gifted way before DD does. The most recent thing that had someone asking me about his age is when I was dropping the 2 of them off for a day of MDO this summer. He was sitting nicely against the wall readin a chapter book while I dropped off his sister. As I walked towards him, someone asked me how old he was and when I said 5, she just looked at me and said, "Is he really reading that?" I wanted to say yes, and he would be reading a more advanced book but wants to read as many books as possible this summer to try to win something from the summer reading program. I figured that would have been seen as bragging though. So I just said smiled and said yes before making him put it away to take him to his class.
  11. Oh and DS is currently in a phase of wanting to spell everything so I am now M-O-M and hubs is D-A-D and so forth. We went to the library last week and the libarian says, "Hi, how are you today?" His response was g-o-o-d. When I explained to her his phase she immediately said, "oh that is w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l!" He looked at me quickly, guess he can't spell that quickly :)
  12. I tend to forget these things pretty quickly, but will try to think of a few of them. 5yo DS was wanting to use some paper the other day to write down his and his sister's powers (he is into super heros). He later turned the paper over and started writing down numbers couting by 2's on the first line followed by 3's on the next and 4's on the one after that. We haven't gotten to multiplication yet so I was pretty impressed. Since he was having so much fun with the writing (he used to hate writing anything). I decided to buy him his own notebook that he could write anything he wanted in. :) The day after I gave it to him he had written "Hi I am Gray come and learn ill give... you homework!" Now he did leave out the apostrophe, but everything was spelled correctly other than that. Also loved the ... he was really building up that suspense! He wrote that inside the front cover. Then in the back cover he wrote, "bye bye." On the first actual page he is writing a list of books he has finished since he got the notebook and told me that is "their" homework. 3 year old DD is often hanging around while DS is working on some work. On more than one occasion while DS has been working on Link Winks, a book where you are given 3 clues and the answer to the 3 clues all rhyme, DD has yelled out an answer to one that DS was struggling with.
  13. Thanks to everyone's posts! I think I was overtired and had been staring at my computer for too long last night. A somewhat decent night's sleep and now things are looking better. I will have to make sure I don't post anymore late at night  Now I am off to take my entusiastic readers to the library so they can read their summer away!
  14. Thanks for the laugh. Happy to know I am not alone in my feelings sometimes :)
  15. Following! My DS5 also started reading at 2. We have allowed him to read the first 2 Harry Potter books and he was fine with those. He was in the process of reading book 3 and then got distracted. I told him that he could not go past book 3 at this point due to it getting darker and more mature content. He is currently reading easier chapter books b/c he is wanting to read as many books as possible this summer to try to win a prize from our library's summer reading program. The books he is reading now are Arthur books and they are somewhere around reading level 3. He reads one of those in about 30 minutes. I just keep a list on hold at our library and switch out every couple of days. While these are not pushing him at his current reading level they do interest him and are not too heavy. Also just having him love devouring books makes me happy :)
  16. Thanks. I know you are right. Probably just feeling overwhelmed at the moment since I am in the planning phase. :) I think I have a pretty good idea now though about what I plan for the Fall. My biggest concern has always been not pushing my kiddos too hard while still having them live up to their full potential.
  17. So as I gear up to start our first year of "official" school for DS5 I am reading through a lot of posts on this forum. As I read I am feeling like there is no way I can teach my child at the level he will need me to be able to. I know for certain the public and even the private schools would not be able to reach him at all. I know I am the best choice, but reading what some of your children are learning I am sitting here thinking.... I don't even know what that is! I am guessing I will be a lot smarter after homeschooling than I am now ;)
