I am struggling this year with decision making. Not sure why. Tell me what you think with complete honesty. I really need to make some decisions and, due to new budget issues, need to keep things on the (very) cheap this coming school year. DS (almost 7) needs LA that is short and sweet. He hates writing, he is a solid reader (level 3-4 books), needs some spelling help but it generally "clicks" with him, and did I mention he hates writing? I was looking at Queens Language Lessons for the Very Young 1 for him. The reviews are SO mixed, though. I happen to have been given Queens Spelling A and B here but I am not sure I like the looks of it. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks! If I get a new printer I will be getting the PDFs but if not I am just going to get the printed books. My old inkjet goes through cartridges every 200 or so pages at $45 a pop.

We are going with Math Mammoth next year. Are the Answer Keys necessary for grades 1 and 2?

I am good with planning and prepping. I just need some guidance.

I was looking at nature study options and came across these. Reviews, however, are very scarce. There were only two on homeschool reviews.

See....that's where I am stuck. DS will be 7 and is ready for 6-8 except for the writing. He HATES writing. DD will be 6 and *might* be ready for 6-8 but is probably better suited to 5-7.....but DS would be bored silly with the literature in 5-7. I guess I could run both but getting two literature packets would be really hard on me and our library is minuscule. I have the guides for both but need student books and literature. I was gifted 6-8 and got 5-7 beyond cheap. It's still ALOT of money and our budget is tight. Really tight (single mom). Right now, we have a good groove going....and I have the guide for Beautiful Feet Early American here, which may be a better fit with some tweaking.

My youngest will be 6 in two weeks. According to reading eggs her reading age is 4.75 . She reads level one BOB Books and can spell CVC words with letter tiles but it's a struggle. She has a huge vocabulary, an incredible imagination, and is great at figuring things out...except reading. My oldest, 11 months older than her, is a grade ahead in reading. All kids are different.

Tell me why or why not I should use it for 6 and 7 year olds. We have our own math and LA.

DS(6) has been doing really well with Singapore Math. We are halfway through 1B and in his review today he scored 100%. We supplement with Splash Math Grade 1. He is amazing at mental math now. I am going to be switching to Math Mammoth for Grade 2 (it's ease of use appeals to me) and supplementing with Challenging Word Problems 1 from Singapore as well as Splash Math Grade 2. But "just because" I gave him the CLE placement test and he could not come close to passing grade 1. Obviously the styles are VERY different so I am not totally freaked out (anymore, lol). I am wondering, though, if I should supplement with CLE 1 and solidify both styles of math. Thoughts?

Have you looked at Moving Beyond the Page? You could combine quite a few subjects.

Something like that would not be for us....simply because we enjoy flexibility too much. Being tied to classes, to a brick and mortar school would be like a noose. Plus, I do not buy into the whole "socialization" thing.. that is for my golden retriever, not my kids.

We discovered two apps that has helped DS solidify the Singapore concepts. One is Splash Math. It pairs really well with 1A/1B. The other is Number Bonds. Neither are free (1 was $10 and the other $3, I think) but were totally worth it. That said... my DD is in Essentials B and Singapore is just very obviously not going to work for her.

DS will be 7 in July. We will be doing MBtP 5-7 but I need to beef it up for him. I want to add grammar and spelling and maybe writing. What are your favorite programs for this age? Christian or Secular...it does not matter. He does, however, dislike writing too much so that is a factor. He is a good reader, reading level 3 very easily. TIA!!!

Today was a good example of a typical 1st grade day for us. DS is a young 1st grader....he will be 7 in July. Formal Lessons Math - 25 minutes Phonics/Spelling 15 minutes Writing - 5minutes Read-aloud - 10 minutes Informal Lessons Math App - 15 minutes Science - 20 minutes (the kids cross referenced wildflowers they picked) Science - 1 episode magic school bus on pollen. Literature (at bedtime) 10 minutes

I was 90% confident in my plan to combine the kids in Moving Beyond the Page 5-7 this coming school year...but the lack of 'history' is nagging at me. Before I picked up MBtP (super cheap) I had planned on building our year (for a 1st and a 2nd) around Beautiful Feet Early American Primary. I am wondering if I am doing my kids a disservice by putting history off at least 2 years if we were to stick with MBtP.
