  1. So a bit of sticker shock with the eval price. NP said: "A psychoeducational evaluation is $2250.00 and generally insurance can pay a fair share of the fee. You can check with your provider by asking if they cover a psychological evaluation ( if you inquire about the educational piece it won't be covered)" Checking on what will be left for me if insurance covers the psychological part. I will be sending a letter as you all suggested to the board of ed if it's not in my budget, and honestly the budget is super small. So I hope a school eval will be a quality evaluation. If I understand right, they cannot diagnose just show you scores?
  2. I am did the evaluations to place ds11 in WWE. At first, I wanted to place him in WWSkill 1 , but he was not able to do the year-end assessment for WWE 3. He has slow and forgetful summing up the passage and forgot half the dictation. End of year WWE 2 assessment is ok, if I ignore his handwriting and spelling. I still have to remind him to put spaces in between words, his spelling is off and his letters are not the exact size they should be. I know the handwritring is its own issue I am trying to figure out. I honestly have been letting him type more or do things orally b/c his handwriting was like this. In math, his numbers have improved so much b/c I keep telling him to make them neater and smaller. So I am hoping to work on the handwriting and see how practice improves. He knows cursive, but chooses not to use it. Would you do WWE 3 or 2 with a child like this?
  3. This book is awful as an audiobook! I got it so dh could listen but it makes you zone out. Thanks for the encouragement, I'm having a lot of I can't do this moments. But plan and check off the marks and it will get done. Very good to hear. Do you have EF issues too?
  4. Sadly, it's me whose trying to pull this off. I have Smart but Scattered as an audiobook and haven't finished it from like a year ago. I'll just have to channel my inner Flylady.
  5. I brought ds8 a reading tutor today. She agreed with me that he should be evaluated and said in her own way that he does seems dyslexic. We will see an NP in a few months. This was a free first meeting session for her to get to know him. She gave me tons of tips, one of which was to stick to a good routine every day, be very consistent in the same order or subjects at the same time. That dyslexics really need this structure to function well. I have a dilly dally 11 year old who would forget to shower and how to do math if I didn't remind him, love him but that's how he is :) and a 5 year old who is completely obsessed with me and needs to get in on anything I'm doing with another child. I've been struggling with structure and organization for so long. I hear the siren song of we're so relaxed HS bloggers, but relaxing is stressing me more. I do need and want a routine and still do fun things like field trips. Add in dh who has the classic dyslexic brain and works at home and I feel like I need to remind him all the time what he should be doing, I feel like it's too easy to say HS isn't working for my crew. What do you say about her advice? How do you implement structure for you dyslexic dc? ps, my son doesn't have a dyslexia label, but I highly suspect so I'm just treating as such until seeing the NP.
  6. ok 2 seems to be the winner. I asked my middle son and he got all pouty and said he wants to set it up his way, so there you have it. Has anyone's dc taken a class with Minecraft Homeschool? It sounds fun, but are they learning?
  7. I think Middle Ages has about 108 lessons, so I would imagine at some point combining or skipping here and there. Did you buy the timeline or make one?
  8. Thanks! Looking at this YT channel now. I may save this for a day next week I want a big break. I can see the boys getting sucked into this.
  9. I feel like I don't contribute much to the boards except help me threads, so here something productive! http://www.kirstenperfilio.com/workshop.html This workshop will address multisensory strategies to use with children while reading and spelling. Where: Fanwood Presbyterian Church When: Thursday, April 9th Time: 10-11 am For parents, homeschoolers, and educators. The room will be determined closer to the date of the workshop. I will inform registrants via email by April 6th. Register via the link Registration ends April 3rd!
  10. You're right, I would want documentation first, but the NP hadn't gotten back to me and setting up any kind of appointment seemed a stress relief. If anything, one session can help me teach better. She works with and recommended the NP I talked to, so yay!
  11. Here is my update: I've been making sure I am sitting with him for reading lessons for a set amount of time, stretching out the book lessons over more days. We got through our review and moved onto compound words. VT says with right/left exercises he needs to slow down and be more serious. He tries to add his own flare to it and make it "silly". This seems to be helping too. I found a reading tutor who has been tutoring OG for 25 years. We will see her on Monday and she seems very interested in tutoring me to help him as well. I don't plan to sign up for anything right now, but I would like to meet her for the hour and see how it goes. The one NP that came highly recommended to me finally got back to me and said she is booked for the school year, but can see him in the summer. I think this works out for me. He will have graduated VT by then, I pray!, and I will have a few months of being more diligent, taking all things slower and more focused to see. I'm happy with this for now and can move onto stressing out about the next thing/child :)
  12. Sorry, I didn't get a notification of more replies. Just seeing these now. It's good to know that you are still getting something out of it skipping the time lines and little summaries. ETA: I did go ahead and buy it, so we'll see. I might supplement with a bunch of movies, etc to make it seem more alive.
  13. Did your kids share a Minecraft account? I want to try out Minecraft Homeshool, but they play the game already sharing the older dc's account. Even without the classes, is it better they have their own accounts?
  14. I fast every Ramadan, sunup to sundown for 29, 30 days, no water or food for the daylight hours. Probably not what you are looking to try, at least not a whole month, but I do experience benefits. shed a few pounds. I feel like my mood is more even. The first few days do feel like the body is cleansing. And you will definitely notice when it's time to eat and you eat the wrong thing. If you do eat mostly only wholesome things when it's time to eat, you can break bad habits.
  15. That sounds like a good thing to try out. Ds5 is an issue. He finds really creative ways to direct attention back to him, but he has his own kind of work to do too. Maybe he'll cooperate :)
  16. Can you please share with me what works in your homeschooling? I *love* that they love their legos and books and audiobooks, but as soon as I turn my back they disappear to their rooms. I feel like half my day is rounding people up and then watching them space out while doing math. would love to hear your wins/fails with this type of child.
  17. so you have to get your diagnoses first and then you can apply for reimbursement?
  18. I am trying to see if my son's insurance covers an evaluation but they wanted CPT codes. Have you had success getting insurance to pay for your evals?
  19. wonderful to hear, that always seemed interesting to me . About how many months (years?) did you practice the biofeedback before you felt comfortable?
  20. Do you have a freecycle group near you? You can list and have that stuff gone in half an hour, my favorite way to purge when I want something gone now.
  21. DS started Uzinggo.com this year for science. It's supposed be for all middle school, but he finished all the topics early. What could I use the rest of the year for physics that's hands on with some math that I don't have to piece together myself? Also any recommendations for biology next year?
