Hello, I'm trying to decide on a couple of things for 7th grade. For writing we used WWS1 and I think it is just a fabulous program and wanted to keep going with it, but my daughter on the other hand loves W&R and wants to switch back to that program. My concern is that it's not a "rigorous" enough of a program? I want to her have a solid writing background, will W&R be solid enough and teach her the skills needed? If we do switch back what book should we do? We had only completed 1-3 last time we used it because we also used some Killgallon writing books with it. So should we move up to book 5 or 6 or continue with 4? I’ve also looked at LLATL and considering switching to this since it contains all aspects of English in one and possibly adding in a middle school killgallon book. I’m just worried it too “light” it looks great, but I have no experience with it. Now for math, she completed pre-algebra last year along with doing Alcumus and has still continued to do Alcumus. So we are going to move on to algebra 1 and tentatively plan to take 2 years to complete, if needed. I plan on using Foerster's and I may possibly purchase the MOB videos. Does this sound like a good plan or is there a different program we should look into that's better suited for a student her age starting Algebra? Are there self paced online/video courses for science and history that won't break the bank?

I saw the master list of online classes, but I was wondering if there was a list of, specifically, self-paced courses? If there is not, I’d love to hear about the courses you know about. I’m especially interested in science and history, but all subjects are welcome and affordable classes that will not break the bank are very welcome! Over $400 for *one class* is not in the cards for us right now since we have more than one kid who would like/need to take classes in addition to the regular curriculum we need to purchase.

None in particular and I’d prefer to stay away from the debate of accredited vs unaccredited. I’m just looking for suggestions from people who may have some. I’m considering Abeka and Calvert, but would like to research more schools before we settle on one.

I’m looking for flexible options on an accredited diploma. I know there have been many cases of an unaccredited homeschool diploma being successful, but I’m looking for an accredited one in this situation.

Does anyone have suggestions of programs that offer a high school diploma that are still flexible and allow for homeschool of some subjects and also duel enrollment with a local college?

We actually came from PM standards edition, and just now switched to MM for pre-algebra. I’ll look for the other thread and see what other options there are out there for pre-algebra. She’s always had extreme issues with being distracted. It’s something that has been an issue since the start.

I’m not sure I’d want pre-algebra for two years, but I have heard great things about CLE. Great idea to try pages from multiple chapters. We have used the videos and they didn’t make a difference. Most of is probably due to distraction that’s a huge issue for her spamming all subjects and areas of her life. We just started a homeopathic remedy for focus. It’s not that she doesn’t understand what or how to do what she needs to she just doesn’t like this program or the look of it. I’m not sure and really not sure how to proceed.

My daughter is doing MM7 their prealgebra program and she’s just not liking it at all. It’s taking an extremely long amount of time to do, she says she doesn’t like it/written instructions are not clear (we do go over them together before she starts). She is beginning to hate math. She’s never been thrilled about having to do it before, and she’s extremely distracted, always has been. She has always been bright in math though. She’s completed all of PM standards edition. So my question is, should we just stick with it? Should I switch to a different math program. If so, which one? I just don’t want her to become completely adverse to math.

I need some recommendations for book about physicians, specifically psychiatrists. My dd is very interested in wanting to be come a psychiatrist and she would love to read about more people who are/have become one. She’s read many books about scientists and some physicians, but we cannot find many about the latter. She is younger middle school age, if that helps in giving recommendations.

How about the wizard of oz series? Not animal related, but the Mary Poppins series is great as well.

I agree with the above posters, WWE is not a lot of writing. We also use/used AAS and used the tiles for some of the days of the week, so it’s only physically writing 1-2 days per week. For grammar we like FLL, no writing in the early levels.

Agree, which is why I created the post asking for alternatives.

I agree and never said I think we “should” use it, hence, the point of my post asking for alternative options that are rigorous but not the discovery method. I would like to stay with a rigorous program because she seems to be leaning strongly towards a science based career and she does like math, just doesn’t love it or want to spend her free time on it.

Is there an alternative to AOPS pre-algebra. My daughter is strong in math, but doesn’t necessarily love it. I’m not sure the discovery method would work well for her. We’ve always used Singapore Mathematics Standard Edition, so I’d prefer to keep that same rigor for pre-algebra. I’m just not sure what program we should use.

Agree with the both of you, which is why we’re thinking about moving on as well. The teacher’s guide is so much more than the higs.

I started out using them but after the lesson from the hig, the textbook, the workbook, then the extra books it was just causing a math burnout for all of us. My son is now using the same program and I don’t have regrets not using them. They may be a perfect fit for some, but it wasn’t for us.

As I had mentioned earlier we’ve used the standards edition. I specifically chose the standards because the hig was so wonderful. I may end up just continuing with it for 6th. Not entirely sure yet.

It’s hard deciding where to go next with math.

She has been doing Standards Edition from the beginning. For some reason I haven’t like the look of DM.

We are going to be wrapping up primary mathematics 5b at the end of the school year. My dd has done fine this with program. We only use the textbook/workbook, not all the other add one. I’m just not sure which direction to go for the next school year? I’m thinking of possibly doing level 6 (not thrilled with this option since there is not a hig), moving on to math mammoth 7, or possibly aops pre-algebra program and just going at her pace. Not if the latter would be too difficult? Any other options or advice on any of the above choices.
