  1. Has anyone's child attended Mathpath camps? (It's a 4 week summer math course.) If so, could you tell me how well your child liked it? This course is for children who are PG. My DD is bright (IQ 146) but not PG. I'm debating if the course would be too hard for her.
  2. Thanks! Do you know if this a math program that Russian students currently use or is it program that dates back 20-30 years ago? (older is better in my mind.)
  3. What is Russian math? Is it a book, a curriculum, the math done in Russia? Cathy
  4. We live overseas and in one country that we lived in- it had a school for the gifted. The minimum IQ to be placed in their school was 130. It had kids from 5 upward. My DD went there for 1 year. She says math was finally interesting. Everyone got it quickly and understood the subjects. It was her favorite subject. In addition, it had English, French, Science, History and art. All classes were geered toward the higher spectrum for a child. There are special needs classes for those who needs can't be met in the regular classroom. Are our gifted children, the true leaders of business and government tomorrow, to be denied the proper resources for an adequate education that fits their needs? One hour pull outs don't work. Cathy
  5. My DD does 5th grade math with CTY. What is the Descartes's Cove math CD like? Games? Fun? Boring? Would a child whose already doing school math plus CTY math benefit from the CD? I would only want to buy it if it was fun, interesting and somewhat challenging, but not too much. I'm more interested in it being fun. Her schedule is too full as it is. Cathy
  6. SoCal Sandra.. May I offer my opinion of what you wrote about your teacher? Please print it from here and send it to him. It would make his day to know how effective his teaching was almost 40 years ago. This is a tremendous testimony to the power of a good teacher. Cathy
  7. My DD is gifted in the traditional.. math, science reading. She's a strong leader and very athletic. What I find amusing about her is that even now, at age 10, she doesn't care about her clothes. They could be inside out or backwards and she probably wouldn't notice if someone didn't tell her. Here's this child outperforming her peers in academic matters, but still needs help in making herself presentable to outsiders.
  8. I'm from Oregon, but not in Oregon. I wanted to say hello to all of anyhow! I live in the Original Damascus.. The oldest city continually lived in since beginning of time... Damascus, Syria. Cathy
  9. I wanted my DD to take the math course. Her test score did not allow her to qualify for it. I wrote a letter asking for an exception. They said No. They are willing to allow children who are within 3 points of the range. But she was 12 points out of range. I was willing to pay the prices but their answer was still no. I don't know if it's thinkwell videos. I haven't ever heard that. Cathy
  10. Thanks Lorna. I have a question for you about the comic books. This might be a good idea. Do you think the children can really learn something from them? I think I'm anti-comic books for learning; however that may just be a prejudism that I have and it's not valid. I always thought that they were just for funnies.. so thinking real learning could occur is new to me. The list of French books is great. Thank you.
  11. Hi Cleo, I remember some of your postings from 3 years ago when we first moved to Switzerland. We now live in Damascus Syria. My DD is completely fluent in French now, accent and all. Her school has text books for French history, but I think novels are much more interesting than any text book that she could read. I would like to supplement the schools text books by giving her books written in French about the history that she would learn in CM1 and CM2. She's almost 10. Ideally these novels will be written in French. Her weakness in school was the history and geography. Her French grammar is TB! I complicate things because I don't speak French. I don't know what is or isn't a good book in French. Thanks! Cathyt
  12. My dd attends a French speaking school. Her schooling is completely in French, however we don't own many books in French. Can anyone recommend a book or two in English about French history? Or if you know the name of a book written in French for a child, please advise. We live in an Arabic speaking country- and it's difficult to find French books locally. I'll need to order on line. Thanks, Cathy
  13. I'm hoping someone responds. I signed my DD up yesterday for two classes. She's 9. I hope she's not overwhelmed.
  14. After the primary language spoken in the home what language did you teach and why? DD spoke English and Russian since birth When did you add the third, fourth, ... language? 3rd language French age 6. immersion into French school. 4th langauge Arabic age 9. We now live in the middle east and she gets French fulltime and Arabic at school. I've hired a private tutor for additional Arabic. In addition, she's now learning to read/write in Russian. What materials do you use? Do you recommend this product? Why or why not? Can't answer. We tend to move to the countries where the language is spoken.
  15. Thanks to both of your posts, I joined the singapore forum. Thank you, Cathy
  16. What do you do when you don't understand the question yourself? We recently ran into a problem with CWP 3 and I couldn't help her. (I am not any good in math.) Our solution was to move to 4a regular books. Are there any teacher books for CWP yet? (I bought 6 years of books when dd was 6- there weren't teacher books 4 years ago for the early grades.)
  17. DD is a smeller. She used to drive her cousins crazy when she had to sniff them from across the carseat! She was only two then and she's nine now. She no longer actively sniffs people, but her nose is just as good as before. I thought the remark about allergies and asthma was interesting. DD is very sensitive to certain foods that she can't eat. Therefore, if she was given a food from an unknown source, she would smell it and then taste it very carefully before swallowing it to see if it was safe. I thought (without any facts to support this) that people with food sensitivities were probably better tasters then those of us with no food allergies.
  18. :iagree:DD loves Secret Seven and Famous Five. It's too bad that they can't easily be purchased in the US. Cathy
