  1. So what would you do? Go to the church that really works for you spirtually, or go to the one that your children love and that you will realistically do a better job of attending regularly since it will be so much easier?

I was born and raised Catholic and left the church about 20 years ago. I was lucky and went to a Church of Christ with a good friend whose kids were friends with my kids. I didn't always like the church but since the kids were motivated to go it was much easier to keep going on a regular basis.

I really miss the Catholic Mass sometimes. I loved the old church and the whole ritual of it. I miss the Catholic community, but my beliefs are too different and there are things I just can't abide by.

  2. Do you have to have random urine tests to make sure you are taking your meds? I've been on Adderall xr for years and have never had to have a urine test. My doc says she has to start doing random urinalysis now.

I'm just curious about this. To stretch my meds because they cost so much, I sometimes take 1/2 a capsule until we can afford the next rx or I skip a day if I don't "need" my meds.

  3. ....who has trouble seeing (reading) the Rainbow Resource sample pages?

:banghead: Since they changed how their sample pages are set-up on the website...most of the time I can't read the sample pages. I see the pages....I see the words....but they aren't clear enough to read. What's the point?? :cursing: I usually have to go over to CBD and hope that they have the same thing and see their samples. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem....or is my computer screen set up wonky or something??

    :iagree:

  4. Our whole family is a bunch of night owls. I'm so glad we don't have to wake the kids up at 6:30 for school anymore. I usually go to bed between 1 and 2 and the kids are rarely in bed before 9 or asleep before 10. My goal is to get up at 7:45, wake the kids up at 8, and start school at 9, but we have many days when we're all falling out of bed around 8:30, eating a slow breakfast and getting household stuff done, then starting at 10. It works, we're all well-rested for a change, the house doesn't fall apart, and we get enough to eat (they often ate cereal in a baggie when they went to school).

    :iagree:

  5. I used SL for a few years and loved all the books, but I tweaked it way too much. I'm using MP's full 4th grade with dd9 and she is thriving! We don't use R&S, but we use ALL the MP stuff.

Your dc are pretty young and I think doing all MP with them would be time consuming unless you can combine them in a few subjects. Tanya at MP is great at helping you combine dc! That being said, I'm not sure how long MP would take you so I'll just share what our experience is.

My dd does a lot of MP on her own. We do the first lesson of Latin together so I know she has a good grasp of it and I do daily reviews with her. She does all her own reading for Famous Men, Christian Studies, Lit, Science and Geography and we do most of the questions together orally and I do daily reviews of "facts to know" and recitations. She is usually done with all subjects by 2:00 so she has plenty of time for reading. I've got a lot of SL books that I assign her in the afternoon.

So, I think I would pick either SL or MP to be your main curriculum and just add in components of the other one. I think MP and SL complement each other pretty well!

  6. We know far too many teens in "school" (private or public) who feel lonely to attribute it to a homeschool phenomenon. The search for soulmates, building relationships and maintaining friendships takes time, flexibility, opportunity, dedication, tolerance, patience, courage, communication and maybe even a bit of pixie dust at times.

Life is a busy enterprise these days. By the time many teens with a sense of dedication to school get home, eat and do homework, very little time is left for forging relationships. Add in the extracurriculars and it is even more of a challenge.

This is why we try to set aside time and dedicate effort. There are many false starts and sometimes it really is hard to add one more thing to the agenda. I just keep reminding myself how valuable the friendships I had were in helping me come to know who I am and what I value. I know they helped greatly in deciding what I would want in a marriage and in life beyond occupation.

We meet an awful lot of parents who really can't fathom letting go of the few hours they have with their children. We also meet many who fear time away from academics or anything to beef up that college ap is time wasted. It is not a homeschool thing, it is a the times we live in thing.

    :iagree: Good post!

  7. My dd (9) took piano lessons from age 5-8. She was much like your ds, she did well but hated it and never played for pleasure. I let her quit when she was 8. After a little over a year of no piano, she sat down and started playing then asked if she could take lessons again. I told her she could, but she had to take it seriously. She had to make a commitment to practice 30 minutes every day without me nagging and commit to a year of lessons. She has been practicing 45+ minutes each day and I never have to remind her.

I think after a few years of lessons if a child really dislikes music lessons, why force it.

  8. Lisa, thanks for that tip! I've never of that book before.

Abbeygurl, I forgot to mention that the Great Courses dvds with Elizabeth Vandiver, which are mentioned here frequently, have been a hit with my son. He says that they have made a huge impact on his enjoyment and appreciation for Homer's works.

The lectures are available in digital download or dvds. Since it's a lecture would it be okay to just get the audio download or do the visuals on the dvds add a lot?
