  1. i have the 2nd edition of TWTM. SWB recommends dictation 2-3 times a week w/R&S for 4th grade.:)
  2. thanks! i JUST found my WTM book, so will be referring to that-finally!:D
  3. i am ready to introduce formal grammar and i DON'T want to screw this up like i did for dd.:banghead: i'm not opposed to R&S, but think it is deadly boring.;) my only experience with SWB's LL, is the very 1st edition of FLL, which was okay for dd, but i loathed the overly scripted aspect. i can guarantee ds will not ever, ever do a song or chant to memorize something.;) i'm looking at MCTLA but not so sure *i* could use it. right now he is doing Pentime cursive and R&S spelling. LLATL appeals to me as it is contextual, but he is all over the place in his language ability. i so bad want to say,"shout like!" and i'll answer 25 questions! gotta run out of town but will be back much later!:auto: thx!
  4. in a nutshell, my ds would learn more Scripture than Health. ;) the very first chapter talks about "the body" and due to sin our bodies will die, but the child is then told to be happy about it as heaven is better than earth. (true, but holy cow! my germ and death phobic ds would be traumatized!) can't blame you! ahh,got it! geez.:banghead: thanks for letting me know!!:grouphug: fact.
  5. i know many think it is "light." i'm not keen on formal/rigorous grammar till 6th grade. other than that, can someone explain how it works? does it provide writing instruction? is there busy work? does each level build on the last? i'm looking at the orange book, btw. also, would i need both the TE and student book? thanks
  6. grade 4 arrived in the mail today and all i can say is, "ya must be kiddin' me, right?":bored::closedeyes: not!! my cup of tea.
  7. this is dd's line up this year... Total Language Plus-three guides. includes vocabulary, spelling, comprehension and personal opinion papers. Write Shop Step-by-Step Grammar (she's only used this for three weeks, but we are LOVING it.) in addition to the books she is reading with TLP, she is reading her way through the Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, classics for the 8th-9th gr. level and various books to accompany her World Geography. my concern, is that she hasn't stayed with *one* English curriculum. nor has she had a steady spelling or vocabulary curriculum. i am thinking i need to add in some kind of word root/vocabulary/spelling/study so she has a better grasp of our language and is well prepared for ACT/SAT. it seems so late to add in something like Latin. she tried Wordly Wise, but I dropped it due to the busy work. would something like Rummy Roots or Vocabulary for the High School Student be enough? oh, how i wish i would have done things differently. tia
  8. we've tried R&S(snore) Easy Grammar Plus(no retention whatsoever and i didn't care for sequence) we currently LOVE Step-by Step Grammar. it makes the most sense to me of any grammar program i've seen. it is not juvenile, yet is aimed at ages 10-adult.:) good luck!
  9. thanks for this link. i don't use HOD, but have been reevaluating my approach to LA with 10yo ds. we are currently using ILL. thanks, OP!
  10. i haven't read the responses, but the first thing i thought of was why the h-e- double hockey sticks doesn't she just give it to you? man, some people.:mad: off to read the replies.:grouphug::grouphug:
  11. you are correct!! i am frustrated and i do want to hand her schooling off.:crying::blushing: i love her to death, but i don't feel like i can do this. i am so embarrassed to disclose her curriculum as this is, well, such a rigorous forum. in addition, i feel like a total flake. i post, i whine, then leave. repeat.:o but, here goes... Math- Math Relief's Algebra 1-she's on the 22nd lesson of phase 1 and is doing well. finally!! off to a late start, but doing well. no tears, gaining her confidence back. Science- Apologia's Physical Science-only 5 lessons in....(we dropped Monarch's -SOS's online version- Physical Science due to their crazy disorganization.) she likes Apologia now that she has found a way to use it. i should note, that she is able to read one entire module in one-two days. we've had to set up a system that forces her to slow down. English- -Total Language Plus-using the 8th and 9th grade recs. right now she is doing her 2nd unit. i have her do the reading comprehension(which is the WORST part of our day), spelling, vocabulary and *some* writing-mostly personal opinion-like papers. i am supposed to be reading to her, but she HATES that. yesterday i threw in the towel and told her she can read it by herself, but, she would need to narrate what she reads. today she read a chapter(Anne of Green Gables) in less than FIVE minutes and her narration was,"they were disappointed that she wasn't a girl. she doesn't want to return to the orphanage." i asked her to elaborate and she shut down. -Write Shop 1-she thinks this is babyish, but her writing is improving- she is only on lesson 4.( i kid you not, i am on a first name basis with Deb and Kim-they are THE best.) -Step-by-Step Grammar 1. (dropped EGP) -she is also reading through the Chronicals of Narnia.(sp) Social Science -A.C.E. Geography along with books-one for each PACE. this is her get-r-done part of the day and i don't care.;) Electives- -Monarch's Speech -Logic(Fallacy Detective) -Civics-making my own or using Monarch's OKAY- -- this year she started with SL core 100. dropped it. i LOATHE the IG and didn't think that rushing through so many books was helping dd in the area of comprehension. it also wasn't until we were several weeks in, that i realized that for many dc, SL's LA(especially the writing component) only works if they have been with SL each year-which we haven't. she was lost. i was lost. she would NOT discuss the books with me at all-she completely shuts down. it was a big failure. thus the reason why so much has changed. really?? please PM me and tell me what you do to survive and what schoolwork does she use??:grouphug::grouphug:
  12. i have read so many threads about boys being like this, but not girls! i am exhausted trying to motivate her and try to instill self-discipline in her. she simply wants to get her school day over as quickly as she can. she could care less about anything to do with school. dh thinks she needs to be pushed more-so do i-but *i* cannot be the one to do that. i have tried to the point of crying myself to sleep, and living in a complete state of stress. i do not know what to do.
  13. i want to give up, but have no choice but to hs dd. otoh, i don't think this is working out. i feel our relationship is waaaay too strained. she shuts down and refuses to discuss literature with me. at every moment she tries to take the quickest and easiest way out. it is driving me insane. i don't want to be her teacher anymore-i just want to be her mom. she would have been enrolled in bju online this AM if we could afford it-but we cannot. thanks for listening to me whine again... :crying::banghead::svengo:
  14. bumping this....unsure i can get into an ENT anytime soon. if i went to a chiro,is there something specific they can do other than a regular adjustment? thx
  15. okay. i'll look into an ENT tomorrow. dh just warmed minced garlic under half an onion, wrapped it in a washcloth and put it on my ear. felt soooo good.... thx, mamas.:grouphug:
  16. what can an ENT do for me? i thought they were for doing surgeries. thx
  17. Tammy, the cyst/fluid wasn't infected. i should have included that. thx!!:grouphug:
