  1. I'm considering doing Sonlight's Core 200 as a Bible credit. (not the literature part - just the history)

I also want to recommend Bible Study Fellowship. DD (9th grade) started near the end of this year. We will be doing Matthew next year. (yea!) Her favorite part was the homeletics (a Bible study method) they did during their weekly class. I'm thrilled that she's learning this at such a young age.

I have friends whose teens do Community Bible Study and really like it, but I don't know much about how their study (the teens') is structured.

  2. I went and looked at Sam Houston State University's requirements. Mainly because they're easy to find. This is what I see.

Texas Education Code (TEC) 51.803-51.809 ( State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy) requires that all students meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas Four-Year Public Institution:

    • Successfully complete the recommended or advanced/distinguished high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or
    • Successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced/distinguished high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs; or
    • Satisfy the College Readiness Benchmarks on the SAT or ACT assessment.
      SAT – 1500 out of 2400 (Verbal + Math + Writing)
      ACT – 18 English, 21 Reading, 22 Mathematics and 24 Science

You only have to meet one of the requirements. As homeschoolers, we can fit that second requirement. I do believe a classical education fits the "rigor" requirement. :)

I can't guarantee that every college has this exception, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that they do. As others have said, check with the colleges you're looking at.

  3. I used to only wear makeup a couple of times a week. Church, going out to dinner, stuff like that. However, I've noticed in the past year or so (I'm 46) that my skin is looking much older. I've decided I want to look better and feel better about my appearance, so a few months ago I started wearing it all the time. I've also spent some time on youtube watching makeup tip videos.

About a week ago I went to pick up a prescription. I'm there regularly, so I've gotten to know some of the workers. The lady working that day said, "Your makeup looks really good. You don't usually wear any." So, I know it was noticed in the past. And, I know that I'm doing an okay job with application. :)

  4. BJU Biology DVDs. Actually, online, but it's the same as the DVDs. We switched from DIVE at Christmas and I am so glad! There just was not enough instruction in DIVE for my non-science-y kids.

DD's outsourced English class. She loves it and I love not having to teach English. Such a relief for me! DS will be taking this same class next year.

BJU World History. We switched to TOG, but have switched back. I've decided to stretch BJU's World and American History over 3 years to slow down the pace. The kids are happy with it and so am I.

Actually, now that we've got science figured out, it's all going very smoothly.

  5. I'm so sorry, Rhonda -- I hope this particular time was an exception, rather than the rule. Your dad could have picked up a virus or something, and that could have been enough to really wipe out his energy. Maybe he'll get more good time out of the next transfusion.

    I'll pray for him. :grouphug:

Thank you. I really appreciate the prayers. And that's an excellent point about a possible virus. I hope that's true!

  6. My dad comes from a line of very long-lived people. (His mother died at 96. Her older sister said she would have lived longer if she'd taken care of herself. :) That sister lived to be 105.) We always assumed he would live a very long time as well. He'll be 82 in June. He suffers from a bone marrow disorder that requires regular blood transfusions. He used to be able to go 6 weeks between them. I saw him today and this latest one has only lasted about 3 weeks. He was so absolutely exhausted. Once he gets the transfusion, he'll be fine for a few more weeks, then this will repeat itself. In his doctor's words, it's his "new normal".

I just see that he's probably not going to live another 15-20 years like we had hoped. I lost my mom in 2004. I do not want to lose my dad.

  7. DH met me at work, and I'm a nice girl. :) Other friends met in college, some (even the nice ones) at a college bar. There was one students went to for the dancing, even if they didn't drink. Others met at church, but you said that was out. How about through other friends?

  8. High schools can make whatever rules they like about how credit will be applied to the high school transcript. It could be that the courses are lighter in content, but most likely they just want the students to be taking English courses all year instead of half a year. As a homeschooler, you can apply the credit however you want. However, if you're applying in state, admissions may take into account the way high schools usually assign credit, but I really don't know.

    Hadn't thought about that.

  9. I have always assumed (and seen here) that if my child takes a community college class as a high school student, a one semester class would be counted as one high school credit (a year's worth) on their transcript. So, one semester of Biology at cc would be shown on their transcript as equal to a year's credit of Biology.

A friend has her son in a special public school that is affiliated with the local community college. The idea is, you can graduate from high school with an associate's degree. As he is ready, he takes college classes. He's a sophomore and currently taking English and history at the college this semester. However, these classes will only count as a half credit on his high school transcript. What's up with that?
