  2. Games are a great way to increase vocabulary and build enthusiasm for an additional language. We play BINGO, memory match, and Go Fish out of matching picture cards. In the car we play I Spy in the target language. You could also try http://www.starfall.com. It's a great, free website for teaching to read in English, but would also be fantastic for learning English vocab. Good luck!!

Thanks I am going to look it up

  3. 1.5hrs? WOW. Thats a lot for K. We are using Rod & Staff ABC series and that takes maybe 30mins a day? We read 1 chapter a night with my 2nd grader for a read aloud and thats it.

Check out your HSing laws wherever you are- I bet you are doing way too much when you dont have to. :grouphug:

Really I have read to my ds for 30 minutes a day. Then I met a mother who read to her dd 3 hours a day. I had the feeling that I didnt do much with my ds. Maby I am going to read less then. But to tell you the truth my ds loves it when i read to him. But I dont do it in one time. I think in 4 or 5 times .

  4. As a native English speaker teaching Spanish and French to my 3yo, I would avoid flashcards unless in very limited amounts, and focus more on speaking casually throughout the day, books, watching fun little videos in English, and just having fun with it. I have no problem with teaching multiple languages to my daughter. I'm the only one who gets them confused :P

As for books, picture books are a good first step. I'd quickly transition into reading bilingually (translate as you go) and/or read simple books where the meaning is clear and the words are repetitive. Lift-the-flap books are fun. They get to practice remembering where an object is, it's more engaging for them, and little ones don't find it boring at all.

    Good luck!

Thanks you really helped me a lot. Could you recommend me some good picture books at the age of 3 years old. I love it that you learn your children 3 kinds of languages... It is very motivating for me to read this...

  5. Hello everybody,

I am new here this week and have learnt a lot.

My ds is almost 4 years and I am reading a lot now to him. My question how does your day look like. I would like to know how is your daily schedule. How long do you read to him a load and what do you do more and how long? Do you have fixed daily schedule.

I am hoping to read a lot of answers so I can learn from it.

For now I am read 1,5 hours a load. Using singapore math kindergarten and we count a lot maby 15 minutes a day. And writing i think 15 minutes a day . Thats it .

    Looking forward to your answers....

    Thanks,

  6. Hello ,

I have read the read a load handbook and the well trained mind book. But it seems to me that picture books and story books are only read ones. There are many books which I want to read more times. Do you also read books only 1 time?

Don't you think that children learn more if they are read to at the same books if there are many words which are new to him.

I think my son learns more if I read the same book more times , to learn the new words by head. My son is now 3,5 years old.

    Thanks,

  7. Read to your son as much as possible. 20min, at a time, is probably the max limit for most 3yos, but I would slowly add in more storytime breaks during the day as he grows.

Designate a shelf that is just his and keep his favorites handy as well as rotating some new ones in and out continually.

Audiobooks are wonderful too. Winnie-the-Pooh, narrated by Peter Dennis (He does the BEST voices!), is a must-have. Listen while he's playing, while traveling in the car, while doing little chores, while he's resting at naptime. Librivox.org has a collection of free public-domain audiobooks.

Thanks I will look it up

  11. Hello everyone,

I am new here. And just completed the book the well trained mind. When I looked over the forum, I saw many times the 3 R's. The only thing I understood that it is the basics.

Could anyone tell me what they are?

Ok and an other question I read to my 3 year old son. How long should I read to him. What is the best time in a day. I read to him 20 minutes a day. Is that enough?
