  1. Thanks to both of you for the advice and the encouragement! Since my oldest is only 7 1/2, I'm still trying to figure out the "when it all comes together" thing. I generally don't worry too much about comparisons with other kids or placement levels but it's still good to hear from others who've been there! :grouphug:

  2. I'm trying to come up with review ideas for the summer. My son just finished list K and I dont' want to go any furhter right now. He spells well when we do lessons together and I remind him of spelling rules, etc. When he writes on his own however, it's not so good. I think he just needs practice so over the next couple of months I was going to review one old list/day + have him write one original sentence. I'm going way back to list D for review.

Does anyone have any other good review ideas?

  3. I have a distinct memory of being in elementary school and crying to my great grandmother (not a typo) because I had to write a book report on The Hobbit and I thought the book was dumb.

Fast forward about 30 years and I decided to give the book another try after running across it at the library. My first impression was that I remembered absolutely nothing from the book...nothing, nada, zip!

My 2nd impression was that it was just ok! I wanted to really like it but it just didn't thrill me. I'm probably treading on hallowed ground here. Isn't one of the basic tenents of homeschooling is that all homeschoolers should love J.R. Tolkein and/or C.S. Lewis? :D

I'm not a big fantasy fan but I have to admit (and I'm not ashamed) that I love the Harry Potter books. I just can't get into Tolkein. Is it just me? Am I giving homeschoolers a bad name? :w00t:

  4. I personally didn't pay much attention to the entire thing but I do agree that if some people felt they were being excluded, they had every right to voice their opinion to Subway. My only caveat would be that if they did choose to write Subway (or anyone else in the future), they voice the opinions of their family only and not the "homeschooling population at large."

    Just my humble opinion FWIW...

  5. Why have I been paying for store bought jelly all these years?? My first go at jam-making turned out pretty well and it wasn't as labor intensive as I thought. It was a little trial and error...I initially only put about 4 inches of water in the pan to boil the jars after filled but I soon realized that the water needs to "cover" the entire jar. My husband and I also debated how high to fill the jars so I relented and let handle that part :D.

I found a Splenda/Sugar blend at the store and used it. You only use 1/2 of amount of sugar called for and it had a nice flavor. Now, I think I'm onto blueberry jam...I just need to find some more jars!

  6. We just moved our youngest into his brother's room. Now, all 3 boys are together! We had bunkbeds for my older two but they insist on sleeping together in one bed. We just moved the top bunk down and gave it to my youngest. We have 4 bedrooms so we have plenty of room but they really wanted to be together. Now my youngest's room is being turned into an office (yeah) and we're leaving the 3rd bedroom as is...a playroom. My situation is a little easier though since they're all boys.

This may only be for a season or 2 but they seem really excited, for now! :D

  7. Well, I'm spending my holiday weekend cleaning & reorganizing the house. I've moved my youngest into one bedroom with his 2 older brothers, at their request (I must be crazy.) I'm also turning his old bedroom into an office so I'm organizing all my homeschool stuff again (for the umpteenth time!)

While cleaning out cabinets, I can across an entire box of cd's that we obviously don't use. My question is what should I do with them? We usually just listen to our Ipod so I can get rid of about 80% of the cd's I own but does anyone buy cd's anymore? I probably have over 100 that I just dont need to keep. Has anyone had any luck selling their cd's or did you just turn them into expensive clay pigeons :D

  8. My boys kept asking all morning when we were having tea. My mom made 2 different desserts (she likes to bake) and the boys were pretty well behaved! They helped set the table, make finger sandwiches, etc. We didn't do anything academic...I just had them tell grandma a little about what we've been studying. They all discussed what they would like to have grandma make next week and went away on a nice sugar high :D. We'll definitely try to make this a weekly date.

  9. Then, they did the 4th grade HWT cursive book in 3rd grade, followed by EF copywork in the HWT font.

What is EF copywork? I started my 2 sons early with HWOT Cursive (2nd grade & K.) I was wondering what to do when they finish the workbook.

  10. I was at a homeschool expo a couple of weeks ago and I sat in on a Tapestry of Grace workshop. I had assumed that TOG followed more of a "classical" philosophy but the majority of ladies in attendance definitely did not have that bent. When discussing the language arts portion of the program, one of the attendees piped up about how those "classical people" teach their kids grammar before 7th grade and how ridiculous it was. I just smiled to myself and made a note to definitely avoid her the rest of the expo!

I'm still a proud (but apparently crazy) classical homeschooler!

  11. For the last 3 weeks, my soon-to-be 3 year-old only wants to build puzzles! I guess there are worse things but at any given time, there are 4-6 finished or partially finished puzzles all over my floor. He'll even say he wants to go home so he can "do puzzles." I just hope it's not turning into a "Rainman" situation!:D Just thought I'd share...

  12. I loved Trivium's Academy's thread from a few days ago and got inspired. I was telling my mom about it and she wanted to take part too. We love going to tea anyway so this is a great way for her to be involved w/ the boys. I was an only child so she gets a little "stressed" being around the boys

My boys are really excited. My mom and I went out and bought the tea set yesterday and she baked a lemon pound cake just for the occassion. My boys like to help bake so we thought we'd let them pick out a recipe and we'd make each week for the next tea. It's a cold, blustery day so it's perfect. We're excited!

  13. I tried to buy sunscreen at Wal Mart in early September last year. I live in Georgia. It was 90 degrees out at the time. "uhh, we don't have it right now. It's seasonal." yes. the season when you use sunscreen? is summer. which is RIGHT NOW (I said inside my head).

They may not have sunscreen but I bet they heavy jackets, gloves and rain boots! It drives me nuts. Here in So Cal, the best part of our summer is late Aug-Oct but yet the stores clear out all their summer items in July. It drives me nuts! I live in So Cal...why does my local Wal Mart need snow boots?? :confused1:
