  1. I wore makeup as a teen.   Then my first job out of college was in a clean-room and makeup was verboten.  It takes all woman about a week to get used to be without.  Then after that anytime I wore foundation, my face become hot.  Not chemical burning hot, but wearing a blanket my skin can't breath hot.  I have rosacea so if I wear anything it is foundation.   My husband is just as happy for me to not wore makeup.

I tried fake lashes a couple of times and liked them but DH said he actively disliked them.   I suspect it was just the expense.

Someone mentioned the giraffe woman as an example of weird beauty trends.   That was originally an uglifying thing.  The women were naturally extremely attractive and they were often getting snatched and forced to wed someone from another group.   So, the idea was that if they were ugly they could marry the boy next door.

  2. My dad grew up near a plant where those peas were canned.   It is entirely based on sorting.  The small early ones got the petite label.  Also, the ones that were lowest but still human-grade got the generic brand.

That is something I've applied when deciding whether to try generic.    Was this likely sorted?   So, something like cold cream, generic is likely the exact same.   Canned veggies, I never go generic.

  3. A good bottle of wine is my go-to in a gift exchange like this.  Always goes over well.

Well, except for the one time I tied on a torn sock as a joke.  At work one of the big-shots said the gift exchange could be anything within reason - except for an old sock.  So I found one of DH's clean socks with a hole and tore it bigger and attached to the obvious top of the wine.

How did you get the cats to even try it?? I haven't been able to get mine to try it.

I've heard that Cat Attract is helpful.   You might try turning it off so that it doesn't go off at all when the cat is around.

We started the kittens on that from the beginning and it was a long time before I was able to leave it on because the girl (runt) was too small.

We also started out with it in the living room where the kittens spent most of their time.   We are slowly moving it to the mud room.  One time I moved it 5 feet and there was a little bit of litter spilled on the floor, maybe 1/8 of a cup.   One of the cats started to squat on that teeny bit of litter, didn't even look around for the litter robot.  I grabbed him and tossed him in the litter robot and he went.   So, I'm limiting the moves to 2 feet at a time.

Lucky you!  Where I lived, the nearest McD's was 12 miles away so ....

Most of us didn't and don't get jobs that easily, especially not without past experience and/or connections.  It's challenging, stressful, time-consuming, but not hopeless.

I had a similar experience to Heartstrings.
But, then I grew up in Arlington, TX which had Six Flags and Ranger Stadium.   Those two places sucked up a lot of the teen labor particularly since they were largely summer jobs.   I remember being shocked that I had to actually Work to find a job when I got out of college.    Before that all I had to was to look the interviewer in the eye, shake hands and say I was ready for work.    That got a job at least a notch above the lowest.

I live in an exurb in TX now and I don't see a huge need in either direction.   I don't see many Help Wanted signs but I know a couple of places with several openings so I wonder how those places treat people.  It has been a long time since there has been limited hours due staffing.

  6. Can she drop some money on a litter box?    We kept a litter of feral kittens (5) so now have 5 cats.   We are extremely pleased with the litter robot.   The reason it helps with the smell is that after a delay to let the clumping litter clump, it dumps the clumps in a drawer underneath.    The cats seem to enjoy it and sometimes run to it when they hear it run and then they do their business.   I assume because they figured out that it is always clean after it runs.

I don't know if it's well known. I still hear "But planes have excellent air handling systems!". That may be true, but it won't help if the guy behind or next to you sneezes and coughs on you for 3 hours.

I also don't believe that they regularly used to their full capacity.  Just like the blankets that they used to loan out for long flights.  Theoretically those could have been washed between people.  Those air handling systems take a lot of energy running full speed.  Hasn't someone getting sick after taking a flight always happened?   Each person might not get sick after every flight.  But if I had an immune problem, I'd spend the day at an elementary school in January before I'd take a flight.

  8. I answered by 10, but it was really 11 but that was the closest option.

The pediatrician was in our former city about 45 minutes away.   She wasn't the doc that saw DD as a baby but she bought the practice when he retired.   Although that had been several years ago.

The family doc was two blocks away and highly desirable.   Huge waiting list and we snuck DD in under the "part of the family" unofficial rule.   Also, the first visit was for a tetanus shot and not an exam, so I think that helped.   DD has a rare problem and sees an Endo at Children's hospital, so we consider that her primary doc.   The family doc is just for physicals in case the endo misses something.  The family doc is so desirable I've heard jokes of people making a list of old people that are patients and then watching the obits to see when "a spot opens up".

    Ok that’s crazy ha

side note - people get impatient with me when I read forms. Maybe emailing a copy ahead would help if they are rushing at a face-to-face interaction. I was rushed signing my divorce settlement and I did not appreciate it. The woman (who had to notarize it, not my lawyer) was later told to not do that.

My realtor was shocked when I asked for the sale forms to be emailed before the signing.   I was buying a house for 2x my annual salary (it needed a lot of work)   I was going to read all the dang paperwork.  He was a good realtor, but no one had ever asked before.

I had this in elementary school in the 80’s. It must have made the rounds. I know I failed. 🤣

I was born in 70' and I saw that in maybe 8th grade.  My grandfather had told me about it when it happened in his class, so I was forewarned.   It was given in Speech class, so some activities were weird anyway.

It did help me to always read all the instructions from then on because I'm not sure I wouldn't have been one of the people barking at the chalk board.

  12.

I won't go into specifics because of the horror of it.   But a friend of a friend discovered that her Dad had been snatching, abusing, and killing kids for decades when she found his photo album after he died.   What somehow makes it worse for me was that he knew he was dying and he didn't have memory problems.   I almost phrased that as his mind was fine, but that is false at face value.   If you are wondering if you might have known one of the families, the police were given everything.   I asked my friend what she'd thought of the guy.  She said she thought he was a jerk but didn't get serial molester vibes.

  13. I know from teachers that several school districts in my area put in this rule for the Spring 2021 final exams.

Any kids that shows up, writes their name on the exam and turns it in, gets a 50 minimum.

If it has one problem correct, then it is a 70 minimum.

This was the rule from before the exams were given, so the schools knew that they'd failed miserably.

  14. Some friends of ours live out in the country.  Packages were generally left near the mailbox.    Then they installed this special package delivery container, as in it was designed for that and was clearly marked as such.   Next package delivery they got a delivery photo of the package on top of the turned over trash can with the fancy-dancy package delivery container in the background.

  15. Most delivery drivers are perfectly normal people.   But there are some that are drivers because they can't do any other job and are really odd.   I think everyone has a story of the "insane thing that the delivery driver did."    If they left a legitimate package, I wouldn't worry.

  16. In the 80's there was this book called Home Remedies.  My mom had it.   Well, there were probably many books.   Anyway, this one said that even a hot wash and hot dry don't kill the yeast.  So, you keep re-infecting yourself unless your body chemistry is such that it can't grow.   So, they recommended boiling your underwear.  I really really really wanted that to stop.   So, I boiled my underwear and wore mini-pads for a few weeks, then I boiled them again.   After which they mostly fell apart and I bought all new underwear.    But I didn't get it again.

That was years ago and to this day I do a wash load of just underwear.  I throw everything my washer and dryer has at that load including the sanitary cycle for both wash and dry.  If I got yeast again, I'd boil again.   But I think the idea that a normal wash and dry doesn't make my underwear completely and totally clean effected me.

You've just opened my eyes. All my life, I kept wondering, rolling my eyes, and laughing at the supposed silliness of my Persian family and relatives using glass when making tea. I've always mocked them, since as far as physics goes, the glass being a conductor, making it all hot, and hard to hold in one's hands, etc. Now I see why. It does taste better. Thank you for all your tips. I'm going to look into the Chemex, as well as all the other tips that you so kindly mentioned.

Thank you to everyone! Feel free to continue posting and sharing your thoughts. I really do appreciate them all.

Just my personal opinion, but even the drinking container makes a big difference.   I used to have a great-aunt that had the most amazing coffee.   She always claimed she didn't do anything special.  But she had these lovely china cups.  I eventually figured out it was the cups.   My brain just said, "Oooh, special!"
