Back in the day when my daughter was in K (she's going to be a 4th grader this year! Sniff, sniff...), I compiled a list of everything we read aloud that year with my review of the book.
The list is here on my blog. Hope this helps! :001_smile:
i bookmarked this. I have already read some of the same, and they were liked.

I don't do Peter Pan.
I don't either, and I recently tried. The story is fine. But Peter Pan is such a selfish twit. My DH said that he wished he could have been Peter Pan, and since I think he is a twit I get a little annoyed at DH while reading the book.

OK, so I'm changing topics a bit.
I was at the library book sale and I got the 1902 edition of Young Folks Library for $16.75 (21 books, 75 cents each!)
Is anyone familiar with these?
I looked at the link, and I think you got a steal. Not based on the price they wanted, but on the screenshots.

It can get expensive even with a true handyman husband. Just the drywall sheets for a 1700 sq. ft. house cost $2000. And wholesalers think that one house is too trivial of an order.

Our "New" house is about 100 years old. We have gutted it, and are nearing the end of remodeling Weirdest thing was the addition. DH was leveling the pier-and-beam foundation when he discovered that the addition wasn't attached to the house. It was like a another house really really really close to the main house.

I like #5 in the article
5. Don’t lie if you get caught — travel lawyers agree that misstating your intentions could leave you facing fraud charges. Instead, proudly state that you’re doing your part to help the airlines understand the inefficiencies in their pricing structures, and that you’re bringing exorbitant fares more in line with the free market.

When I went from always having a roommate to living on my own, I discovered a serious lack. I had no wine opener. None of my neighbors had one either. If you are really thirsty, you can push the cork inside with a really big nail and a hammer.

Does anyone know the secret behind the wonderfulness that is Charlie's?

Well, one problem with the minimum sentencing laws is it is just the minimum sentence, NOT the minimum time the perv will be in jail. I just looked at the registry for where we will live in a couple of months.
In 2007 a guy was sentenced to 10 years for "INDECENCY WITH A CHILD SEXUAL CONTACT" victim was 5 years old. He is now living in our future town.
Another guy was sentenced to Life in 1983 and is out.
A third was convicted of "AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD" in 2005. Victim was a 6 year old girl. He was charged with 15 years and he is out now. This guy lives TWO HOUSES AWAY.
A fourth was "AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD". Victim was a 10 year old girl. Sentenced to 10 years in 10/2012 and HE IS OUT.
This is in a town with one stoplight in Texas. We have a rep for being a "hang them high" state. If only that were true. They don't report as much info as they used to. For example, you can no long find out how long someone was in jail.
For the example of the guy that took a girl out of state, I wonder if that is because it was federal? I used to know a guy that before he became a tee-totaling Lutheran had been into some bad stuff. He said when he stole a car he always took it across the state lines and bought gas and kept the receipt. That was because if he were caught he wanted it to be federal. You would serve your complete sentence but the prison would be cushy.

So, you were at an info session for something costing 28K a year. Did they give you champagne and expensive organic food to nibble on?
Although, a friend of mine is moving and the preschool will cost 20K a year. So, maybe if you are willing to spend 20K on preschool, 28K on 3rd grade might seen reasonable.

That is the type of name I like. In picking names we decided ahead of time that any name in the top 10 would be eliminated.
It is amazing to me that in a Sunday School class of 20 3-4 year-olds, there would be 3 Jack's.

But where are they supposed to go?
I have no sympathy for them, but yeah let's get real. Where are they supposed to go?
Where are they supposed to go? In Jail and stay there.
About every 6 months I check the pervert registry. They do move frequently, so maybe there is hope for the OP that the perv will move. Many years ago I noticed that the guy across the street had only spent one month in jail. One. The description of what he did was pretty heinous. The registry never actually said how long someone was in jail, just gave the date they went in and out. It was only that his incoming and outgoing photos looked precisely the same that made me look at the dates. I then started to look at those dates for everyone. I quickly learned that a standard sentence was up to one month for every year of the victims age, up to about age 15. No one was in for more than 2 years unless the victim was an old lady. It made no sense to me until I realized that the defense probably threatened subtly to harass the victim on the stand. That rule of thumb might have changed since then because I think my state now has a minimum sentencing law. But, I don't believe perv's can be cured, so I think they should be locked up for life. The OP's "neighbor" is a good example. They are certain he will reoffend, yet he is out. If the OP looks at the details, I seriously doubt that he served his complete sentence.
Also, in all the people I looked at I never saw someone registered that had probably been a couple in love/lust. Like a 20-year-old guy with a 16-year-old girl. If the male or female victim was >15, the perv was a >40-year-old man.

I think that doing a little without when you are just starting out is good for you.
You need pots and pans, but the rejects from the family are fine. You need a place to sit, but lawn chairs and/or family hand-me-downs and/or garage sale finds are fine. I think a bed off the floor is important. When I bought my house I didn't have a bed and I lived on an air mattress on the floor. I constantly fought a cold until I borrowed money from my parents and bought a bed.
-
I don't know if they still do this. But, when I bought my house in 1997 I found out about a ... something like a credit report but for insurance claims. Out of curiosity, I got a report on myself. It seemed to have been tried to the address because I found out about the claims made by the previous owner. I always set my deductible rather high, because I figure I won't file a claim for a small amount anyway.

Somewhere here is a thread with several of the coupon codes. You can use one right after the other. So, 4 weeks free, then 2 weeks free. ...

From someone whose mother "disappeared" her lovey one day when she was in school: It is cruel to get rid of a truly beloved item. I know now that my mother thought she was doing the right thing and she wanted me to help me "grow up." All it did was break my heart and make it harder to get to sleep at night.
Yeah, I know-- :nopity: Well, it did help me to understand my own children. The 10yo still has a pastel rainbow colored hand knit blankie in his bed. Two years ago, the 15yo took his tattered, ragged blankie out of the zip lock baggie that I had stored it in, gave it a good sniff and then told me I could get rid of it. :)
Not too long ago my father was talking to his uncle. Uncle talked about how dad (my father's paternal grandfather) threw away his teddy bear when he was about 10. Dad's Uncle was in his 80's. I never heard a single good thing about Dad's Grandfather.
With DD, we tried to actively encourage her toward a replaceable lovey. And she started to. But then one needed to be sewed, and while it was waiting for that DD latched onto this extremely flat, irreplaceable bolster pillow with an eggplant purple cover. After the first time she threw up on it and we had to give it an intensive wash, I sewed a PUL cover onto it. DD has decided that she doesn't want the purple cover anymore so her lovey is called "Purple" even though it is white.
-
In college, I knew kids had their lovey in their bedroom. I see nothing wrong with it.
I do think that there is a max age for carrying the lovey, though.
-
Just an idea from the peanut gallery since my DD isn't there yet.
But, have you thought about getting the games book, and the game pieces? Maybe plan a Math Games slot into your schedule. Since you are looking for joy of math....

I am a bit mollified by the idea that blondes with white skin are what they offer because it sells, rather than a racist plot.
I remember in Taiwan being disturbed by the mannequins. I was engaged and mannequins wearing wedding dresses were everywhere. All had humongous breasts. I am a D and from my observation that was the largest in the country. But, the mannequins were larger than me. So, the little girls wanting pale blonde dolls wouldn't surprise me. Sad though.
-
Awww, man. Say the racism isn't so!
DD is still too young, but I was really looking forward to a wholesome sturdy doll company. I even bought one of the horses for $5 at a garage sale. DD is almost 4 and she can still sit on that thing,.

I think when in doubt go a little dressier.
When you have a closet to choose from, to me Sharp Business Casual means the higher quality items. So, I would reach for the Talbot's Navy pants, but not the Target Navy pants.

In the first audiobook thread there was a recommendation for Usbourne's Farmtales. They are very gentle and nothing bad ever happens, and they all start in precisely the same way. I think the least gentle story is about a pony that is scared of its owner and the Boot family buys it. Why the pony is scared is never said, although he does carry a stick. My almost 4-year-old loves them.

In my area, if you graduate early you are banned from being the valedictorian.
Basically, they want the smart kids to stay around to do well on the tests that the school is judged on.
-
This makes me grumpy. My class was around a 1000 and they were able to pick a Valedictorian. We did have weighted grades but there were a lot less AP's to choose from in the dark ages.
Read-aloud for an almost 5 year old girl where public school isn't the setting.

They are probably talking about 8 as the reading to themselves age, not the read-aloud age.
My daughter is 3 and quite enjoyed the My Father's Dragon books.
I wish books could include a recommended read-aloud age too. Sometimes the read-aloud age is probably the same as the read-to-themselves age. I guess that is why people come here, and make lists for each other.
