  1. I know some of them have come up before, but just for fun - what is your saint name?

I chose Righteous Sarah (of Sarah and Abraham). There weren't many Sarahs to choose from, and I wanted to stick with my real name. I chose her since I'd always associated my name with her specifically anyway.

  2. Well, *I* think it was freakin' hilarious. I may not be a perfect mother, but I'm thankful that we have a witty, sarcastic, dramatic sense of humor in my house. :) I can see how those of you who lack that might miss the humor, but at least you have your personal awesomeness to make up for it. ;)

Why is it necessary to mock the posters who don't agree with you?

Well, stink, I was determined to not feel guilty over my comment, but now it keeps pricking at my conscience. I apologize for being rude.

  4.

Wow, you don't remember that HUGE thread from last year - "How does one provide a classical education? Circe Institute lovers"...That had to be one of the biggest threads I can remember that didn't have Ryan Gosling in it :tongue_smilie:

Mrs. A gave good info about him...I met him last year at a conference in CT...He is a great speaker and a really humble, knowledgeable man...He was very helpful when I talked with him about my oldest son...I listen to a lot of his talks at home...

Hello and welcome! :) I was glad to see that your first visit went well. I love your husband's response to your friends!

I didn't realize Andrew Kern is Orthodox! I've heard of both him and Circe Institute, but I haven't heard him speak. Are you referring to the Great Homeschool Convention in Hartford last year? I was there!! I live in Alabama, but grew up in CT and my parents are still there. So last year I coordinated my yearly visit with the convention. :) I'm curious where you live, if you are comfortable PMing me (general location or state only).

  5. Our alter servers and chanters receive communion first, then kids. Sunday School doesn't start till after the entire service is finished, so it has no bearing on communion. Children up to maybe 12 or so will line up in the "kid group".

It came up because I was holding my 5 year old out of the line for a couple reasons, but was still going to have him go with me later in line. She was insistent that he should be at the beginning, and I should just go with him there. This was a very brief exchange while communion was taking place, therefore there wasn't time to elaborate. I guess I should just sit down with her sometime and chat about it.

On one hand, I get it. On another, I don't completely. I was definitely also taught that the nursery was pretty darn good proof that we are born sinful! :)

  6. I thought this could be a good discussion here. A few weeks ago, a wise baba told me that the kids go first in communion because they are without sin. I'm still mulling that over. I understand saying that little ones are innocent, not understanding the consequences of their actions. And I would agree that babies are without sin themselves. But... I know my 5 year old. That kid ain't without sin!

So as I tried mulling it over, I thought that if I could understand what she meant, then maybe that would help ME with that child of mine. Thoughts?

  7. I work two days a week at a local school supplies store - Thurs and Sat. Kids are with their dad on Saturday and their grandmother on Thursday. I also do computer work for a local business whenever they have projects going.

I won't sugar-coat it: it's a pain on the arse. But you do whatcha gotta do, right?:)

Oh, and I previously babysat a little boy 3-5 days a week. He came here for 2 1/2, up until he went off to kindergarten. It was a really good option for us.

  8. I am Orthodox and use Apologia. This year we're doing Zoo 1. A couple years ago (before becoming Orthodox), we did Astronomy. My biggest annoyance with Astronomy was her occasional comments that have that "those silly evolutionists" theme. You can skip over them, as I did, but you should be aware that it's there (my issue isn't even with the belief, but the presentation - there's no need to made the "other side" look foolish). The other thing I found obnoxious was the frequent "Isn't is amazing that God did such-and-such?" Well, yes, it IS amazing! It just felt forced and I think that a child who is raised knowing God should have the opportunity to discover that awe in their own. Other than that, I don't *think* there would be concerns as far as theology. The references to God tend to be that "God made this birds wing so it can...." I haven't seen anything about "how to be saved" or other comments of that nature.

  9. I agree that Apologia's Zoology 1: Flying Creatures is good if you don't mind a Christian perspective. Lots of facts! There is an entire chapter about flight, so you'd have your sneaky-physics part covered. :) My kids and I also loved the Burgess Bird Book, which you can find free online (though I ended up buying an inexpensive Kindle version from amazon).

We've had a lot of fun studying birds this year!

  10. okay, you're going to have to share those responses if you remember them! :p

One pastor copied literally two chapters of a book and mailed them to me. They were on soteriology and eschatology. Yet in all those pages, I didn't find anything that actually related directly to my question.

The other pastor wrote two short paragraphs, if that. I couldn't say at this point what he said, as I don't have it anymore. He mentioned Sheol, but again, I didn't get much answer.

Fr. Alex took the time to write a lengthy email, understood my question perfectly, and answered it directly, and even took the time to do it during Bright Week, if memory serves me right. I wish I still had his reply, but I lost it due to a later computer crash.

  11. I sure am! Of course, "rest" means that I've washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen to a functional level, washed & dried two loads of laundry, done school with the kids, and started to clean the livingroom. But, as much as I loved the services, I'm relieved to have a day at home.

I remember my first Pascha two years ago. I kept hearing this things about what Christ DID in death, and I was intrigued! I emailed the priest and my then-pastor and my pastor from my growing-up years and asked them all the same question: "What did Christ's death DO for death?" How did it change from Old Testament to new? Is there more going on here than just His shed blood taking away my sins? The responses are what really started my Orthodox journey.

And this year? Beautiful, exhausting, humbling, perfect.

  12. Just thought I'd post a quick update. We spoke with the school counselor for awhile last week, and asked many questions. This week we went back to visit a classroom. I am still on the fence, but feel like I need to make a decision soon, as it will determine what needs to be done over the summer. Prayers would be appreciated!

  13. The kids lay down in the Sunday School rooms between narthex and nave. Is that what you mean? I was surprised, though, that most other kids actually didn't this year. When I went two years ago, there were tons of kids sleeping. This year, on "our" side, it was just my three and one other boy.

That would be neat to meet them! Let me know when they do come and I will look for them!
