  1. Oh, I didn't even think to list that part.  Duh, this IS the Orthodox board... :)  We were learning the Beatitudes before we stopped for Lent.  We'll pick up where we left off there.  I want to work on memory of the Creed, books of the Bible, and some verses.  I also want to read through the Old Testament in a children's Bible, cause the boys' knowledge of the OT stories is rather bleak.

Otherwise we'll see where the road takes us. :)  I'd love to learn the lives of some more saints, for myself as much as the kids.  We'll see what happens.

  2. For DD 4th grade:
    Spelling Workout D

    New American Cursive 2

    A Beka God's Gift of Language A

Writing Strands 3; then Writing with Ease 3, hopefully skimming through and moving quickly into 4 (but that is really far more ambitious than anything I've managed to achieve in the past)

    Math Mammoth 3B and 4A

    Prima Latina
Spectrum Science 4 (to be done on her own during the portion of the year when we are NOT doing science all together)

    For DS 2nd grade:
    Spelling Workout B
    Spectrum Language 1

Writing with Ease 1, again hoping to move into 2 before the year's end

    Explode the Code

    Math Mammoth 2

    For DS Kindergarten:
Reading (right now we're using Alphaphonics but I tend to switch around); begin Writing Road to Reading concepts

    Explode the Code

    Handwriting Without Tears K

Essential Math, then Horizons 1 (started Essential math in pre-k)

    Together:

    Real Science 4 Kids Pre-level 1

Finish SOTW 2 FINALLY, move on to SOTW 3

I didn't order Spelling Workout yet.  It's entirely possible that I won't end up using it at all, and will stick with the [loosely done] Spalding method we've used so far.  I like Spalding, but the workbook approach is appealing to me.  "Go do page 49 and bring it to me when you're done."  That would be fabulous...  I really wanted to use R&S Spelling, but it's packed full with Bible verses and lessons and such.  I don't want a Bible lesson in my spelling lesson. :/

So there you have it.  My much-agonized-over list for the year!!

  3. Most of the people I know (Baptist-like non denominational Protestant) would agree with the sentiment on their wall. What that would mean for your relationship with them would vary from person to person. I know some people that would argue to no end. I know some people who would argue but then let it go (my parents...). I know some people who would gladly have theological conversations and bring it up but not actually argue. The way I would diffuse it, if you don't want friendly debate (I don't like it either!) is to emphasize how very important God's mercy is, that Christ's death brought about salvation, and how we could never earn salvation on our merit alone. Leave out the details and stick with that and they'll have nothing to argue with... Till they see your icons of Mary and start arguing about praying to dead people;)

  4. I took it as meaning that she probably focused more on the historical facts, as I tend to do as well, and let that take up a lot of time that could have been better used.

The Genevieve Foster books look really nice, but there weren't sample pages on Amazon. Once I renew my library card at our huge nearby county system ($50 out of county fee!) I'll see if they have any of them.

  5. I just downloaded The Story of the Greeks (Guerber), English Literature for Boys and Girls (Marshall), and This Country of Ours ( Marshall) free for Kindle; and An Island Story (Marshall) and The Story of Mankind (van Loon) for $.99, also Kindle. Free and cheap Kindle versions can have unpredictable quality, but I can always buy a better edition if we find we like a particular author!

We've definitely NOT been too history-heavy thus far (though I appreciate you sharing that, Milovany - good food for thought). This year has turned out to be our "year of science", quite accidentally. We did some history, but lots of wonderful science. Hopefully next year we can do some science, but lots of wonderful history. :)

  6. Bottom line: I like Story of the World but it's just not getting done. I need some other ideas. I do like books that you just read. I like grabbing extra books at the library for fun, but it can't be required or it REALLY won't get done!

I was content with SOTW so I never paid attention to other titles. Now I'm wondering if something else might be better!

  7. ...I sat in the service with a pit in my stomach, looking at the icon of Christ apologizing for letting Him down, for not being able to do this, for being like the guy who went away disappointed because what Jesus required was too hard...

Yep. I felt exactly like that, too, like that same man. Like I was standing at the edge of truth, looking in, knowing it was where I was supposed to be, but ready to just turn around and walk away.

I remember one particularly bad day two years ago. It was Palm Sunday - my first at an Orthodox Church. All I could think is that I wanted to literally run away. RUN. It took everything in me to not flee out of the church that very minute. At the end of the service, everyone processed around the outside of the church. I went into a Sunday School room and cried. There were days when I DID leave early. There were a few times that I drove all the way out there - 90 minute round trip drive - and left 30 minutes into the service. I just didn't want to be there. But like you, Theresa, He just kept pulling me back, meeting me in my desert, calling me back home.

And now that I'm here? I don't want to run... cause where would I go? Just do what you're doing and let Him keep calling you. And we're glad to have you back! :)
