  1. Have you ever looked into Bi-Polar disorder. Sometimes it can cause the explosive behavior. My friend had a boy who had it and he would beat up his younger siblings and say terrible things to them as well. He slammed the door on me one time as we were going out of church and I had a baby in my arms and my younger daughter (age 7) was in front of me and the door almost hit her head. I kept wondering why does he act like that he's home schooled!? Well I guess now I know that doesn't matter. My sister has Bi Polar and she was always mean to me and when we were teens she would beat me up on a regular basis. For little or no reason but I fought back and didn't put up with it but she always won out because she was bigger than me. It was a horrible way to live! I would consider sending him to school for a year so you can school your other children without disruption. Sometimes they just do better in school. My friend's boy thrived in school as he loved the competition. Like I said some kids just do better in school. My oldest did better in school as she struggled and was so stubborn about doing Math with both my husband and I so we sent her to school. She's back home now for HS but she wanted to come back and I'm not teaching her Math! I made that perfectly clear to her. We are going to use a virtual school and that way I'm not responsible for keeping up with everything for High School. :) Look into Bipolar disorder it can sometimes go with both of these other things or it can be that and you think it's the other. God Bless you! Kelly:auto:
  2. Thanks for your reply back to me. I don't know how she'll do as I've not worked with her yet. She went to Kinder full time last year. She's not hearing all the sounds of some words and will need a lot of practice. I'm also going to look into High Noon and other such OT programs if the ABCD program doesn't work for her. We'll see. OT takes so long and by the time the kids do make any progress they are burned out! No wonder they HATE reading! Does anyone know of a faster way to teach dyslexics?!:) God Bless, Kelly
  3. Thanks Heather and Shelley for your replies back to me. I think my child is done with phonics instruction. She read to me last night and she's got down all of her sounds. I'm going to look into a reading fluency program now and maybe get one from the home school buyers co-op. They have one on sale now. I cannot afford the money or the time it takes to get my child to a tutor and I've heard of parents spending double if not triple on Barton tutoring only to find that there child is NO Better off in reading than they were before. No thanks! I'm going to look at dyslexia games for her next and the Metronome mind training game. My husband has met someone who's used it and seen others use it with great success. I will also be able to use it for my ADD and my other children will be able to use it as well. Much cheaper than paying a tutor. We live in a small town and have to drive everywhere (almost 350 miles a week) with all our trips back and forth getting them to school and back and activities. So an extra trip and extra thing to "have to do" won't work for us with a tutor. I think she's reading at a 6th grade level and will have to work hard to get further but she's got an excellent memory so I think she'll be OK. God Bless you all, Kelly:auto:
  4. I'm back to homeschooling again after several years off and I may've signed up before but forgot my user & password or forgot that I was on here. With my ADD brain I wouldn't be suprised. Can someone direct me to who I could talk to about this and have them check for me? Thanks, Kelly:grouphug:
  5. Thanks Shelley for your reply. Is there a placement test with this program? We were in the middle of Barton and I really hate to start yet another program with her. Someone else recommended the Rewards Intermediate and ABCedarian program for my 1st grader who has dyslexia as well. I will look this program up and look it over. I really just want to be done with all this reading instruction for my 13 yr old and O-T is super slow (IMO) Does this program move fast at all or is it slow like Barton? Thanks aga in for all your help. and if you can send me a private message that would be super with your responses back. God Bless, Kelly:lol:
  6. I've used the Barton Program off and on for the past 3 and a half years. My 13 year old hates it and refuses to finish the program after we finished level 5. I want to finish her up and was hoping to find a computer O-T program or another program that would be less boring and more fun for her. I'm sorry if that offends anyone but I actually fell asleep watching the DVD's that Susan has for the lessons! LOL! I think it's a great program I only wish it wasn't so expensive for one and had colorful books and workbooks for the students instead of the boring black and white with no pictures. Dyslexics like pictures! We are going to try Rewards to finish her up unless I can find a computer program that will be O-T based that would be fun for her. Also I've been looking after someone recommened the ABeCeDarian Reading program for my 1st grader who I believe has dyslexia. Do you think this program is as effective as Barton. I own some of the levels of Barton but like I said I hate it and hate teaching it! Any helps would be greatly appreciated. :) God Bless, Kelly
  7. Should I consider the ABeCeDarian for my 1st grade dyslexic child? I have the Barton program but my older dyslexic child hated it by the time we got to level 5. I hate teaching it as well and was hoping the ABeCeDarian program would be good for her as I do believe she's got dyslexia. She also has Sensory Integration and some Auditory Processing issues that we are using Earobics for remediation as was recommened by her Speech Therapist. I don't want to buy this program if it won't work. Is there another alternative to Barton? I really hate the slowness of this program and wanted to try Phono-Graphix approach which is what the ABeCeDarian program is based on and there is some reasearch that PG works for dyslexia. Any suggestions? Thanks Kelly:grouphug:
