  1. I wouldn't have qualms about safety if my daughters attended LETU. I would tell them to stay on campus at night - or travel to another part of town. There aren't many restaurants/stores close by though.

LETU is a nice friendly school. Both of my dds have/are taking dual credit classes there. Professors are all very friendly. Staff is friendly. Kids are friendly. Very small campus (~3,000 students maybe?).

Ok thanks. She is not an adventurer and would be perfectly happy staying on campus! I guess size is all relative. Her high school is about 200. One of her top college choices is 900.

  2. When you get to Longview for LETU - do not stay near the campus. The campus is safe, but the area around campus not so much. You want to have a motel on the north side of town.

Thank you. We probably aren't staying in Longview, but I have been debating goung directly from Waco to longview vs going to Dallas first. (BFF lives in Dallas and we will be spending a few days there.)

So is the area unsafe so that would you have qualms about your daughter attending Letu? (It is one of her top choices ATM.)

  3. My FIL is a dentist. The horror stories you typically hear about root canals are when you wait too long to have the procedure done and there is and infection/abcess etc. Those are painful procedures/recovery. A typical root canal is no big deal. It is usually best to have a root canal sooner rather than later.

  4. Start with visiting local schools, even if they arent on her list. Visit a small, medium, large school. Urban, subrban etc. (it could be a large Urban, small suburban etc.). The purpose is for her to get a feel for what she likes. After doing this my daughter knew she did not want large or big city. That helped us eliminate a lot of schools.

  5. No direct advice, but has she considered the McDermott Scholars program at UT-Dallas? Throwing that out as something extra to explore if she is academically qualified. Ds has a friend who just graduated out of that program, and he had some amazing opportunities and nice perks.

Thanks! Their scholarships are one of the reasons we started looking at UT-Dallas. Let's just say this girl is very academically qualified for any merit scholarship. The trick has just been to find them!

Her counselor says they are doing some great research which DD likes.

  6. Glad to know that Texas driving has improved sonce I was last there, 17 years ago. 😩😩😩.

Seriously all that driving was the one thing that almost stopped me from going on this trip. That and booking sveral hotels. I hate figuring out hotels.

  7. Oh, that is good to know.  This is what my son wanted to do, CIT training, but they told him he would be up there for 4 weeks to train.

    4 Weeks?!!!!

I guess it varies by camp here CIT is one week. You can do a second week if there is space. Not sure I would have allowed DS to go for 4 weeks his first time!

  8. Are you taking a scheduled tour at Baylor? Do you have any meetings set up? What time of day will you be arriving in Waco? (Will you visit A&M on Monday and then drive straight to Waco?) How long your visit to Baylor will take will depend on what all you are planning on doing that day.

I will be trying to schedule tours at the schools. I won't schedule an interview at Baylor because she is looking at that for Med School and is planning on applying for the Rice/Baylor direct admit. I just want her to get the feel of the campus area, if she doesn't like it for whatever reason no need to go through hoops for direct admit application.

I am flexible as to the time of arrival in Waco. We plan to tour A&M and unless there is reason to hang around head to Waco. She hasn't expressed a ton of interest in A&M but it's between Rice & Baylor so I thought we'd check it out. I don't know what time the A&M tours are yet.

  9. Crew is me, 17yo DD, 9yo DS.

    Colleges visiting:

    Rice

    Texas A&M

    Baylor

    UT-Dallas

    LeTourneau

We are flying into Houston Friday and will Tour Rice Friday. Thinking of going to College Sation Late Sunday. So looking for ideas for Houston for the weekend. Definitly doing Heath Museum. What else would be fun?

Trying to decide if we need 1 or two nights in Waco. DS loves all things Chip and Joe so we will definitly do that. Can we tour Baylor and Magnolia in a day without rushing? Or should I plan for two and leave whenever he is done the second day? We will be heading to my BFF's home in Dallas for the rest of the trip so we are flexible.

  10. Well, youngest came back from scout camp with a bit of a renewed sense of wanting to stay in scouts. He is already talking about high adventure next summer AND asked if he could do some kind of training next summer and then volunteer for a few weeks at camp. Apparently he was asked if he wanted to while he was there this year and really likes the idea.

I guess we will remain a scout family for now!

Beware, once they are staff at camp they will want to go every summer, all summer!

My son was a CIT for a week last year. Wanted nothing more than to do a second week but they didnt have any more openings. All year long he talked about being staff at camp this summer. Being only 15 he wasn't sure he would get to be staff (they like 16+) but they hired him. He can't get paid because he is not 16 but he is having a blast. Plus 80/90 community service hours a week isn't too shabby.

  11. We visited our son yesterday. He is having a lot of fun working at camp but we could tell he missed us (even if he didn't say it). He kept asking if we were staying for dinner and fireworks. Everytime we got ready to leave he would show us one more thing or ask one more question. We got home a lot later than planned but thats ok. I probably wont see him again till he comes home in August. Hubby will probably go up again in 3-4 week but I will be out of town with the other kiddos.

  12. I would have no issue with taking them into the bathroom with me. I have never had anyone even look at me funny for taking an 8yo in the bathroom. My biggest problem is my 9 yo would not do it. He stopped being willing around 5/6.

If it were me I would stop at a fast food resturant instead. You don't need to puchase anything. You can if you want. McD's $1 soda or ice cream cone. It would be worth $2 to me. Plus my kid would be happy about the cone and last longer on the car ride. 😄

  13. At least he should know all the info! We don't like mbc to hold blue cards, as they often lose them, but maybe that's an option for you? We had a blue card go missing, one that had all but the signature done, but the mbc lost it. I recreated it with the Scout, as that mbc had retired. I knew he'd done the work. And a parent noticed last month that 3 older boys never had gotten their WS mbs. We looked back through records and recreated them. Again, we knew the work had been done, but the mbc was a college student and had moved. It seems like they all have to lose one or two before they learn to hang on to them! Each of our boys have notebooks, with baseball card slots and they put them in there. I hate to see a boy put one in his pocket--you KNOW it's going to get washed!

Every time he loses a card we tell him "Well, it should go faster this time since you have already done it all before". We do have the binder. He knows he is supposed to come straight home and put the bluecard in the pouch. I sent him to camp with 3 partially completed Cooking blue cards. We will see what they give him credit for. (I photocopiedthem all before he left.)

If he wasn't doing most of his MB's 2-3 times he would have Eagled a long time ago and had several Palms by now. But it is his journey, not mine, so if he is content redoing everything over and over so be it.

  14. Ds can't wait until he can work at camp. Scouts is such a great organization, great for building friendships, leadership, enjoying the great outdoors, we just love it. That new cooking badge is hard!.

Well he started under the old requirements. Got about 1/2 done. Lost the blue card. Started it again washed the bluecard. Started it a 3rd time before it became Eagle required. Did not finish within a year so had redo with new requirements.

This son has done all his MB's multiple times. If it is not completed and turned in the same day he washes/loses forgets to get signed off etc. Every. Single. Time.

  15. My 15yo son is working at Scout camp for the summer. He is working in the trading post and so far loving it. He has been there two weeks. This is the first week with campers. He did his Eagle project before he left. He needs to finish the paperwork but the hard part is done. He has 3 ER MB to complete. We told him he could not come home without Cooking completed. That MB has been gis nemesis. He has started it 4 times and has yet to complete it! Ugh!

My youngest just became a Webelo. He is excited to "almost" be a Boy Scout.

  16. It also depends where you live (sorry if someone has already said this). If there are a lot of people in your area, traffic will be a nightmare. Apparently a million Californians are going to be making the trek up to Oregon, and the ones who are making it a day trip are going to be caught in a crazy traffic jam on I-5 and won't be anywhere near the viewing window when it's eclipse time.

This. They are saying in Oregon if you are not camped where you want to view dont even try. Traffic is going to be beyond crazy.

  17. Thanks for the idea. I discovered that Siennas are only 4-10 inches (depending on the year) longer than our Lexus. Also, they are similar in length to my first three cars, although I think they probably have more blind spots.

Good point. I'll drive her Sienna for several days and see if I can get used to it quickly. My MIL has a Highlander, so I can try that, too.

I had a Highlander as a loaner car and was excited to drive it because I was sure that would be my next car. Drive wise it drives exactly like the Sienna. What I didn't like was the blind spots. There were a lot more on the Highlander than my Sienna. I really dont feel there are blind spots on my Sienna.

  18. Mr. Principal,

I would like to confirm which class my son will be in next year. He toured class A and was super excited that it was not the split class and that some of his good friends would be in his class. After the tour he was told that was not the case. He is very upset by this news.

Son has struggled in recent years due to several moves, bulling etc. We are now settled (hopefully) and this last year was the best year socially (and academically?) in a long time. He finally has a few good friends and really enjoyed school this year.

If possible I would prefer he not be in a split class. He has been in one before and had issues with x,y,z.

(If said email and not in person I would add "I am happy to meet with you at your convenience to discuss this issue further. Thank you for your time.)

I would also send/talk sooner rather than later. Principals generally take the summer off as well. The one I know stays on email to deal with what his wife calls "the crazies" and I know you dont want to be labeled that.

  19. I love my Sienna minivan. The turning radius is awesome, plenty of room. I am a horrible parker and I find the Sienna to be relatively easy. The inly time I struggle is in a tight parking garage, but the mall or street parking easy peasy. It is also nice to have room to throw a friend or three in for an impromptu playdate.

That being said it I am ready to downsize. I have two getting ready to go off to college in the next couple of years so I will only have one at home. I have no clue what to get!

  20. Disposable plastic ones? Not very many - only at restaurants. Certainly not daily. We do have washable steel straws that get used often at home.

School kids probably go through a lot (juice boxes, milk cartons etc). And working adults who buy lunch daily.

Also, Starbucks/coffee shops goes thru a ton of straws. Iced coffee, Frappuccinos etc.

  21. What if there's a power outage at your house, or wherever the kids are? Are their phones dead in the water if that happens, or does the wifi have any sort of battery back-up?

We just had a week long internet outage in our neighborhood. Hundreds of home with no wifi. Her kids would have been out of luck if they had been here.

If the whole point is to have the phone in an emergency I would not rely on having wifi.

Our plan is $10 to add a line so that is a no brainer for us.
