  2. Do you think this TE will work with the new student ed. or will I have to order a new teachers packet too?

I thought I finally had all my curriclum! I am trying to get my lesson plans written up so I would like to order ASAP.

  3. Can anyone who bought a NEW Hake Grammar 6 tell me what edition it is? Thanks!

I have another question- in the student book -is there room for the student to do the work (the review problems and such) in the book or do they need to write answers on separate paper?

  4. I cant find anywhere that says "Student Edition Inside" in mine.

I have a copy of the student sheets- but they all have the answers on them (as they would in a TE- not that someone has used them).

I did not know there was a newer edition. I wonder if I can find the old Student ed for cheaper than $40.

Also- not everything can be done orally -well I guess you could could but that would be VERY time intensive.

  5. we know nearly all the spelling rules, but we can not spell. I can't even tell when the children have spelt something incorrectly:confused:. my son knows all the rules even better than me, he just cannot tell when to use each rule, so he spells things like We - wea, to make it have the long e sound. even though he knows the e rules.

we just have dyslexia, and have to learn to live with our bad spelling...

I had some of my brothers down playing scrabble the other evening. we all have dyslexia. someone spelt boat as baot. the game continued for at lest 1/2 hour before anyone noticed. and then we had to look it up in the dictionary to be sure.

Oh My goodness- maybe I am a long lost sister! This sounds just like me. I had a professor in college tell me one time I had spelling dyslexia -I thought he was joking. I want to add with my terrible spelling -I spell bad enough that I would never even send a simple message like this w/o spellcheck. I know some of the rules. I am an avid reader- have been my whole life. I also made A's in all my college English classes- because I know spelling is my weakness -I would never hand in a paper with out having a good speller edit it for me. We can learn to work around our weaknesses. The only thing I have seen make great improvements in my spelling is typing on the computer so much- after spell check fixes a word so many times I start to catch on to how it is spelled. I do pay attention to the corrections. And sometimes I can 'spot' a word spelled wrong- like I just saw I spelled college- collage -twice -I saw it was wrong- but had to check how to spell correctly.

However, PTL DS does not have my spelling problems. I think the rules will work well for him (he is one of those kids that wants to know WHY). I am looking forward to AAS.

  6. I bought a Hake Grammar 6 set - USED - from Vegsource.... not here.... Anyway I was looking through the set tonight and I really like the looks of the program and then I realized I could not find the student sheets.

I have a Teachers Edition- a huge spiral bound (but the spiral rings are at least an inch in diameter- maybe 1 1/2" -anyway there is that book and a booklet that is three whole punched- the cover says :Grammer and Writing - Tests, Worksheets, & Writing Lessons. Like I said - no student sheets.

What do you think? Is this a classroom edition? I wonder if I order the student book if this will match up. The cover is similar to the one on the site -but no 6 on the cover. It does say 6 on the inside. It is the first edition- published in 2003.

I like the looks of the program but now if I want to do it I will end up spending more that I would have for a new set! GRRRRRRRRR. I am going to give the seller the benefit of the doubt and assume she did not realize what she was selling. I specifically asked her if this was the student and TE. Oh Well.

Another bit of info on a better note: The seller told me student tests 1-13 were missing so I emailed Hake Grammar to see if I could purchase just the tests and Mary Hake herself emailed me back and is mailing me the test from her home computer and would not charge me though I offered to pay. Supper nice. Makes me like the program even more. Wonder if she is a homeschooler.

  7. My ds does not like using the tiles so I usually do not make him use them if he is catching on without them. He is not as hands on as my youngest who will definitely benefit from using them. So, usually we will spend a few minuted reviewing all of the rules, then I will introduce the new rule, I will demonstrate using the tiles (he is a visual learner) .:001_smile:

This sounds like my son- he is a visual learner- but likes to get to the point. In the early years we used MUS for math- and while he learned a lot- he never used the manipulatives once he understood how to do the type of problem. I still think seeing the problems work gave him a great foundation.

  8. I am still debating on ordering AAS for my 10 YO. While he is not a great speller- he is not a poor speller either. He learned to read by phonics- but I am not sure how many rules he actually remembers. ASS is written to be started with such a younger child, I am afraid it might be too simplistic. I am also considering SS - but I am just not sure.

How necessary is it for a child to know the rules to be a good speller?

  9. I bought Christian Kids Explore Biology for my 10YO -but it is listed as being written for grades three- six (and can be easily adapted for a little younger or older) . I really like the looks of it (the 30 minutes I spent flipping through -I have not actually used it yet.

Here is a link for a look at it:

Whoops- guess I did not read your post thoroughly the first time -CKEB might be a little simplistic- but I like something I can make my own -It could be used as more of an outline and add in more where you feel necessary. Apologia’s HS Biology course will definitely fill in any gaps for my DS he misses this time around.

  10. We read The Hiding Place aloud together several years ago (the boys were about 11 and 13), and it was such an uplifting and encouraging account of faith and God's working in the midst of such evil, that we still refer back to the book as wonderful, positive examples to strive for ourselves. : )

Yes, terrible things do happen, but they are not described graphically and what really shines out in our memories of the book is the hope, faith and trust in God, in comparison to the evil around them. Plus, the book ends with a wonderful, positive account of how the surviving sister goes forward from those events with a positive message of faith, forgiveness, and restoration, which she shares all over the world for years after WW2.

    .

    :iagree:

The Hiding Place is one of my all time favorite books- mainly because it is very uplifting and encouraging- makes you feel you can make it through anything with faith in God.

It may depend on how much they are exposed to in movies and on TV (News)and such. There are terrible things going on in the world everyday -and if things ever change in the USA (or in his life in general) I want my DS to know where his hope should come from.

I was very encouraged by the things Corrie was able to overcome with the help of God. It taught me a lot about forgiveness and to appreciate the small things like blue sweaters and fleas. I think it makes it easier for the reader to make it past the horrors of what happened because not only did Corrie survive -she was victorious in spite of her circumstances. Have you read any of her other books? She went on to do great things with her life, has actually touched millions of lives, she may never have if not for her experiences. I plan to read this aloud to my DS in the next year or so.....

  11. Sorry to copy Kim in Ga but you inspired me!

My 10YO is does NOT love to read. He is a good reader -mechanics and comprehension, and loves for me to read to him... he just will not willing pick up a book himself. By this age I would love to say read this book and him come tell me in a few days he is done but unless I map out so many pages a day ect he never finishes a book.

He loves American history, Narnia, boys adventure. I need to make a reading list for this year.

    Any suggestions?????

  12. Keptwpman- the lapbooks are awesome! Also the older the child the more I think they like doing their own thing.

Dinah Zike's Big Book of Books is great to show all the different folds

    http://www.dinah.com/store.php

She also has different one for different subjects like Math, history, and science. We have the Science one and I love it. It gives me different ideas to go wiht what we are studying.

I also have a book I like called The Ultimate Lapbook Handbook

    http://www.tobinslab.com/shopping/Lap-Books/---Ultimate-Lap-Book-tm-Handbook/itemdetail.aspx

You may do fine wihtout any of these (Keptwoman and her DSs do great) but I like some visual inspiration even when I am doing my own thing.

Ds and I talked about lapbook yesterday and he feels he may have done enough of them for now, he's 10 now after all :001_rolleyes: so we will be doing more notebooks -and will still use some of the folds in these. I think lapbooks and note books are a great way to reinforce learning and keep a record of work done.

  13. He does get to do things during the summer ect (like a week at church camp, baseball, baseball camp, ect.) but I need ideas more on a regular basis. We attend a pretty small church .... Kids that go to PS seems to be so BUSY with all the homework and extra stuff at school -there is just not much time for extra.

Ds is very friendly and makes friends easily. I guess I wish he would make more homeschool friends so he would not want to go to the PS so much.

  14. I have 3 boys ages 22, 18 and 10. This is our 11th year of homeschooling. The older two boys do not live at home any longer -I am only homeschooling the 10YO.

Last year I realized it is much more like he is an only child. He is close to his brothers as they were homeschooled and always around when he was younger -but now from a school standpoint it is just him and I. We live VERY rural (not even a Walmart in town) and there is honestly not much to do locally. We still do stuff- but he doesnt want to just hang out with mom all the time.

We are involved in HS group that used to be very active but seems to have stopped doing much in the last year or so. He does play baseball. He really likes being around other kids his age. With his personality he seems to crave friends more than my other boys did -they were happy to play alone or with someone.

Being the baby I also see him as more of a follower (his brothers are both strong leader personalities). He is a very sweet boy and wants everyone to be happy and like him, (which is wonderful to be around- but worries me more he would cave to peer pressure).

I honestly considered putting him in the private school next year (for sports and social reasons) - but I REALLY do not want to.

Does anyone out there only homeschool one and have any ideas????

  15. I would want this more for vocabulary.

DS would love the CD Rom but the problem is I work 2 days a week at an herb shop. He goes with me and we do school work there (we actually get way more done as I have more time ot just sit than I would at home) anyway- I do not have a computer up there- so I hesitate to get anything used on the computer- because it will not get used consistently we tend to forget about it. I am going ot try and save for a laptop in the next year.
